Celebrate the Emerald Isle on St. Patrick’s Day with movies set in Ireland or featuring the Irish American experience. The stunt begins with Judy Garland and George Murphy in the 1940 musical Little Nellie Kelly. John Ford directs 1957’s The Rising of the Moon, three vignettes about old Irish country life. In a more serious turn, James Cagney stars in 1959’s Shake Hands With the Devil, about an American medical student who gets recruited by the Irish Republican Army in 1921. Francis Ford Coppola directs Fred Astaire (pictured above) in 1968’s Finian’s Rainbow, a musical fantasy (and biting social satire) about an Irishman who steals a leprechaun’s pot of gold and buries it near Fort Knox. The programming event also includes 1958’s The Last Hurrah and 1965’s Young Cassidy.
