Critic’s Choice
TCM, 10pm
Catch a Classic!
This 1963 film poses an irresistible dilemma: What happens when a Broadway theater critic must review his own wife’s play? Bob Hope stars as Parker Ballantine, whose marriage to playwright Angela (Lucille Ball) hits the rocks when he pans her debut. This marked the fourth and final pairing of Hope and Ball, two comedy legends who shared remarkable chemistry across radio, film and television. What makes this worth watching isn’t just the star power — it’s watching two masters of comic timing working with Don Weis’ snappy direction. Ball, already a TV icon from I Love Lucy, proves she can still command the big screen with physical comedy and razor-sharp line delivery. Hope, in one of his better film roles from the ’60s, plays against type as a man genuinely torn between professional integrity and marital harmony. The film captures that early ’60s moment when Hollywood sophistication met television’s broader comedy style. It’s also a surprisingly modern look at the challenge of maintaining separate professional identities within a marriage — wrapped in Technicolor glamour and rat-a-tat dialogue.

Hitchcock and Herrmann
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!
Alfred Hitchcock and Bernard Herrmann are often called the greatest director/composer partnership in cinema history. Despite their divergent personalities, they formed a close bond, collaborating on seven films over 11 years. TCM is showcasing four of their iconic films tonight, starting with the suspense classic Psycho (1960). Hitchcock brilliantly guided viewers into a seemingly straightforward thriller before quietly dismantling every expectation. Herrmann’s score is not just effective but essential to the film’s impact — those piercing strings in the infamous shower scene amplify the violence in a way that is psychological rather than graphic. The night continues with The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956), Vertigo (1958) and North by Northwest (1959).

Directed by John Hughes
TCM, beginning at 8pm
Catch a Classic!
John Hughes didn’t just make movies about teenagers — he made teenagers matter in cinema. Tonight’s lineup showcases the writer-director who defined the ’80s coming-of-age film, starting with The Breakfast Club (1985), where five high school stereotypes spend Saturday detention discovering they’re more complex than their labels. Hughes’ genius was trusting that teenage problems — parental pressure, social hierarchies, identity formation — were worthy of serious dramatic attention. The film stars Brat Pack members Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson and Emilio Estevez. Sixteen Candles (1984) follows, featuring Ringwald’s star-making performance as Samantha, whose family forgets her 16th birthday. The evening continues with Uncle Buck (1989), which gave John Candy one of his finest roles as a lovable slob forced to babysit his brother’s kids.
