Super Bowl a ratings touchdown for CBS; MVP Joe Flacco to guest on Letterman

Updated Feb. 5, 2013, 2:02pm CT Considering a 33-minute delay due to a power outage, and a lopsided 28-6 score early in the second half, there was a time last night when things might have looked a little dicey for the folks at CBS during its coverage of Super Bowl XLVII in terms of viewers continuing to tune in. But with the lights back on, and the San Francisco 49ers storming back to make the game one of the all-time thrillers — with the Baltimore Ravens eking out a 34-31 victory at the last moment — the ratings have proven […]

“Mea Maxima Culpa” documentary a shattering look at church’s silence over priest sex abuse

Sexual abuse of a child is one of the most heinous crimes imaginable. When that act is committed in the supposedly “safe” environment of a school or a church, and by an authority to whom the safety of the child has been entrusted, it becomes an even greater betrayal of the trust that should exist between adults and children. Further, when acts are committed upon children who are not only vulnerable to exploitation because of their age but also because they have a physical impairment, then those acts become truly enraging and saddening. Such acts are the subject of Oscar […]

First ten “Buckwild” episodes air in MTV’s five-hour “BuckBowl” on Super Sunday

Of course, most people know that Feb. 3 is the date of Super Bowl XLVII. But that is also a day when other networks counter-program against the big game, hoping to draw in people who are perhaps uninterested in football, or maybe want to flip away if the game is a blowout. Networks certainly don’t waste this time on trotting out new programming, knowing the historically huge ratings the Super Bowl generally brings in — that would be viewership suicide for such a show (a rare exception might be Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl, now entering its ninth year, but even that […]

Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl has grown into a big dog in pop culture

Just as the Super Bowl started out as a fairly small event and has now exploded into a global marketing phenomenon — and almost an unofficial holiday in America — so, too, has Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl grown into a commercial powerhouse of Great Dane size. The first airing of the Puppy Bowl in 2005 was intended as counter-programming to the Super Bowl, and was a pretty quiet, relatively low-key affair — almost ambient programming, just puppies at play, accompanied by some calming music. But, just as you can often tell how large a puppy will get by the size […]

Pouch the Dog becomes “Chicago Fire” series regular starting tonight

It didn’t work too well when The Itchy & Scratchy Show tried to add “Poochie” into the mix, but NBC’s firehouse drama Chicago Fire is going to try adding a dog to its regular cast of characters when a mutt named “Pouch” gets adopted by the crew of Firehouse 51 starting in tonight’s (Jan. 30) episode. To be fair, a dog in a firehouse makes more sense storywise then just the “edge” Poochie was intended to bring to Itchy & Scratchy (though the cuteness and “aw” factor of Pouch can’t be denied, and must have at least been partly a […]
