Sarah Palin beats Snooki as worst female reality star at lighthearted Bennie Awards

By Jeff Pfeiffer Later this week, we’ll be talking about the Razzie Awards, the infamous and hilarious awards that serve as the anti-Oscars, honoring the worst in film from the past year. But this morning, we received notice of a similar award that was unfamiliar to us. The 2011 Bennie Award winners were announced. Only in their second year, the awards recognize the worst in prime time television. The awards’ name (and, presumably, the face seen on the award itself) are inspired by former NBC head Ben Silverman, the architect behind failed series such as Knight Rider, Kath & Kim […]

VOD Spotlight: “Due Date”

Right from the start it was a mismatch made in heaven. Writer, producer and director Todd Phillips loves working with creative comics skilled at improvisation. Though he worked had worked with Due Date star Zach Galifianakis, most notably on the hilarious comedy The Hangover, he’d never had that experience with Robert Downey Jr., who he calls “one of the greatest talents out there.” He knew Downey was looking to do a comedy and thought the actor would be perfect for the role of a husband trying to get home in time for the birth of his son. “The thing that […]

“X Factor” marks the spot for Simon Cowell

By Jeff Pfeiffer This week, FOX announced that Simon Cowell’s upcoming American version of his hit British series The X Factor will be awarding the show’s winner with a record-breaking $5 million record deal, the largest guaranteed prize in TV history. “It’s a massive, massive risk,” Cowell said in a conference call earlier this week, talking about the huge amount of prize money. “I think it puts everybody, rightly, under an enormous amount of pressure, because I didn’t want to go into this show without feeling a certain amount of pressure. With pressure, you have to find a star. I […]

There’s nothing worse than a mangled “Star-Spangled Banner”

By Tom Comi It’s been said by many performers that “The Star-Spangled Banner is one of the most difficult songs to sing in terms of range and lyrics, and the latter was certainly proven when Christina Aguilera unintentionally altered the words in front of 111 million TV viewers before Sunday’s Super Bowl. And while we don’t want to pile on Aguilera (who admitted afterwards that she feels awful), there certainly is a history both fictional and real about the wrong and right way to sing the song. We begin this trip down Memory Lane with the standard bearer for how […]

VOD Spotlight: “Life As We Know It”

Life as We Know It is a romantic comedy about a man and woman (Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel) who become guardian of their mutual friends’ baby when the parents are killed in an auto accident. The pair, now sharing their friends’ house, have nothing in common but a mutual dislike for each other and a love of little Sophie. Because of the limitations of filming infants and small children, identical twins are often used to play one very young character. With Life, the film’s creators found charming identical triplets — Alexis, Brynn and Brooke Clagett, born in May 2008 […]

Super Bowl Sunday shows for the non-football fan

By Jeff Pfeiffer Not into football? That’s okay, we won’t judge you (too much). If that’s the case, then you are probably overwhelmed by the amount of coverage of Super Bowl XLV, and may feel like you won’t get a respite from hearing about the game at all this Sunday. But some networks have thought of you with a variety of programming marathons that may appeal to both the non-football lover, and those football fans who just can’t stomach sitting through six-hour pregame shows. One of the annual favorites among such marathons is Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl, now in its […]
