“The National Parks”: Episode Four

By Jeff Pfeiffer Last night’s fourth episode of The National Parks: America’s Best Idea was “Going Home (1920-1933).” The automobile is now an omnipresent feature in our national parks. How many families have packed up the old car and driven into these places over the decades? But as we see in this episode, the automobile was not welcomed by everyone in the early days. As we enter these years, talk begins about whether or not to allow the cars into the parks, an early example of our country’s ongoing love/hate relationship with the auto in relation to our environment. Many […]

Tyrese Gibson and BET take us “First In” with Compton firefighters

By Jeff Pfeiffer “I’ve been heavily approached about reality shows for the last couple of years,” Tyrese Gibson tells me at the start of our interview, “[but] I purposely stayed away from it. I don’t want to be a part of ‘baboon TV.’ I want to be a part of TV that’s really going to shed some light on some serious issues and really highlight the heroes of our generation.” The singer/actor/model (and now digital comic-book creator) has found that opportunity. It’s the new reality series First In, premiering tonight on BET and airing Wednesdays, which Gibson co-executive produces and […]

“The National Parks”: Episode Three

By Jeff Pfeiffer The National Parks: America’s Best Idea continues tonight on PBS with the third episode, “The Empire of Grandeur (1915-19).” Though this episode chronicles only a short period of time, it is a very critical time in the history of the national parks. As the episode begins, the nation has a dozen national parks, but they are haphazardly organized, and under the supervision of different federal agencies. Before he passed, John Muir had suggested an overseeing body to manage the parks. After the failure to protect the Hetch Hetchy valley, conservation groups pick up on Muir’s idea and […]

“The National Parks”: Episode Two

By Jeff Pfeiffer Ken Burns’ wonderful miniseries The National Parks: America’s Best Idea continues on PBS tonight with episode two: “The Last Refuge (1890-1915).” John Muir, who figured so prominently in last night’s premiere episode, as he figured so prominently in America’s story of conservation, is back tonight. As the episode’s title implies, it focuses a lot on how, at the dawn of the 20th century, people began thinking differently about the parks and conservation in general thanks to people like Muir. This thought turns more toward how not only the land can be set aside, but also toward how […]

Saturday nights “dangerous” again on Syfy this fall

By Jeff Pfeiffer A few months back, we warned informed you that SCI FI Channel’s changeover to Syfy would not impact the “quality” of the network’s original movie franchise. That is to say, you could expect more of the same formula that has made the channel’s Saturday night lineup into what it calls “the most dangerous night of television.” That held true with a few summer films that debuted under the new Syfy branding, and it continues with this fall’s original movie lineup — except perhaps for tonight’s premiere, Children of the Corn. I can’t speak to the film’s execution, […]

8 Questions With … Cyrus Frakes

By Emily Mitchell Here are a few more fun, quick thoughts from Cyrus Frakes, given at the end of our original interview. Frakes is the star of TLC’s new reality series King of the Crown, premiering Sept. 30. You are at a magazine rack and can pick three magazines. What are they? People magazine. I love People magazine. That’s fun! Out of the fashion magazines, I love InStyle and Details. Do you have a favorite sports team? The Carolina Gamecocks. That’s my college alma mater. If you drag me to a game and make me go to it in person, […]

“Castle” novel to be released

ABC’s crime series Castle is about mystery writer Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion), who ends up assisting police detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) on a case. It became somewhat of a hit after debuting in midseason, and just returned to start a second season this week. Next week, however, will see the release of Heat Wave, a crime novel written by “Richard Castle,” who will “publish” it on-air this season. The hardcover book will be available in stores on September 29. Several chapters had already been made available to fans at abc.com. The plot of Heat Wave is similar to Castle’s […]

Chevy Chase talks about his first sitcom, NBC’s “Community”

Comedy legend Chevy Chase is part of a fine cast that could propel the new sitcom Community, premiering Sept. 17 on NBC, into one of this season’s hits. Joel McHale stars as a fast-talking lawyer whose B.A. degree turns out to be bogus, so he is forced to enroll in a local community college to get a real one. He creates a phony Spanish study group hoping to be alone with an attractive woman in his Spanish class, but ends up drawing in not only her, but also an unwanted, diverse group of other students who hope to better their […]
