The 2016 White House Correspondents dinner, taking place April 30 (you can catch live coverage, including arrivals, beginning at 6pm ET on C-SPAN) represents President Barack Obama’s eighth and final appearance at the dinner. During the course of the past eight years, a number of hilarious headliners have hosted the event, from Wanda Sykes and Conan O’Brien to Seth Meyers and Jimmy Kimmel, with Comedy Central’s Larry Wilmore hosting this year. But many of them have been overshadowed in entertainment value by the president himself, whose charisma and comic timing have made for some memorable moments at the dinner, and […]

Fascinating Sherpa documentary chronicles impact of 2014 Mount Everest tragedy

Two years ago, I interviewed a man who was planning to jump off of Mount Everest wearing a wingsuit for one of Discovery Channel’s live event specials. The Discovery crew was one of many groups that were at a base camp of Everest at the time, which has actually developed over the years into a little village of sorts during climbing season, hosting everyone from TV crews like this, to Hollywood filmmakers to, most often, adventurous Westerners who strive to scale the mountain and pay up to $75,000 to make the attempt. They all would be on hand for the […]

Ahead of New York primary, Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton debate on CNN

As we head toward the important New York primary next Tuesday, Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders will face-off in a Brooklyn debate. Both candidates have roots in New York State, and things have been getting testy recently among the candidates and their supporters, so it should be interesting viewing. The debate, which takes place at the Duggal Greenhouse on the Brooklyn Navy Yard, will begin at 9pm ET on CNN. Wolf Blitzer will moderate, with CNN’s Dana Bash and NY1’s Errol Louis, who is also a CNN political commentator, joining as questioners. The CNN Democratic Debate between […]

In Syfy’s Hunters, Gale Anne Hurd wants to make aliens scary again — and she succeeds

Among her many feature film and television credits, Gale Anne Hurd (The Walking Dead) seems to return time and again to the sci-fi and horror genres, and especially to aliens. Hurd notably collaborated with James Cameron to bring to life the nightmarish alien queen of Aliens (1986), and she thinks it’s time to make aliens scary again. That’s part of her stated goal as an executive producer of Syfy’s new series Hunters. Inspired by Whitley Strieber’s novel Alien Hunter, the series, featuring Julian McMahon (Nip/Tuck), follows a highly classified government organization known as the Exo-Terrorism Unit, which tracks and fights […]

12-hour Esquire special revisits the O.J. Simpson murder trial using archival press and courtroom footage

Thanks to the recent 20th anniversary of the trial and its verdict, and, particularly, given the current FX series American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson, there has been renewed interest in the so-called “trial of the century” — in which former football star O.J. Simpson was accused and eventually acquitted of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman — and its outcome, events that captivated the nation back in 1994-95. If you’re old enough, you may recall all the press reports, and the courtroom drama that played out over the early days of Court TV (which […]

“Donald Trump” and “Bernie Sanders” will face off in an @midnight debate tonight

Comedy Central’s hit late-night series @midnight, which you can usually see trending on Twitter most weeknights, will be staging its own political debate tonight (March 23). The debate pits Donald Trump (played by Anthony Atamanuik) against Bernie Sanders (played by James Adomian). The two actors star in the comedy show Trump vs. Bernie: The Debate Tour 2016, which is currently on tour. The two “candidates” will field questions from the debate moderator, @midnight host Chris Hardwick. Being the interactive show that it is, it sounds like the episode will also field recorded questions from viewers who use the hashtag #MidnightDebate. It might be […]

History’s Alone will be back in April

After 2.4 million viewers tuned in for the Season 1 finale of History’s survival series Alone (a growth of 50 percent over the series premiere), it was probably a no-brainer that the network’s No. 1 new non-fiction series of 2015 would be back for a second season. And so it is, with Alone Season 2 debuting April 21 at 9pm ET/PT. History says that the 13-episode season puts 10 hardcore survivalists alone on northern Vancouver Island in British Columbia. The contestants have one mission — to stay alive. No camera crews, no teams and no gimmicks are on hand, per the network. But a $500,000 […]
