Esquire’s “Spotless” is dark, irreverent and terrific

Spotless, Esquire Network’s first scripted series, is actually a show that has been acquired from Canal+ in France, where the series first aired earlier this year. So while not technically “original” for the network, it is definitely worth checking out. Co-created by Shameless (the British version) writer Ed McCardie and CSI producer Corinne Marrinan, the series combines elements of those two shows in unique ways, throwing in dark humor in some of the grimmest of situations, usually murders and other crimes. The show also resembles Dexter and Breaking Bad in ways, with some gruesome scenes not for the squeamish, as […]

NBC’s Chicago Med joins Chicago Fire and Chicago PD

“The aim here is, every week, if you watch the show, you will get at least one piece of medical information that you probably don’t know,” said producer Dick Wolf at a recent press conference to discuss his new series Chicago Med. The third entry in NBC’s successful Chicago franchise (with Chicago Fire and Chicago PD), the new series will follow Wolf’s formula of “ripped from the headlines”-style drama — mixed in with personal drama, of course. Some of the cast, including Nick Gehlfuss and Oliver Platt, as well as their characters’ trauma center setting, was introduced in an episode […]

Ash vs Evil Dead Episode 1 recap: “El Jefe”

Happy Halloween, and welcome to our first Ash vs Evil Dead recap. Ash is back, baby! Director Sam Raimi kicked off the series Ash vs Evil Dead in fine form, with his legendary manic camerawork, some references to the Evil Dead films, and plenty of the humor (particularly from Bruce Campbell’s performance) and gore that we’ve come to know and love from the cult classic films. When I talked with Campbell earlier this summer on the set of Ash vs Evil Dead, he told me that the decision to make the series a half-hour one was “in order to keep […]

“A big jolly splatterfest” — Talking “Ash vs Evil Dead” with Bruce Campbell and Lucy Lawless

It was just past the first day of winter in New Zealand when I arrived at a location called Riverhead, just outside of Auckland, to begin watching the filming of the new Starz series Ash vs Evil Dead, which airs Saturdays beginning Oct. 31. Coming from the northern U.S., I didn’t find the weather to be quite what I was used to as “winter.” It was very pleasant: sunny, temps in the high 50s, low 60s Fahrenheit. The nice climate added to the loveliness of the filming location, a scenic pine forest. As a fan of the original Evil Dead […]

Ricky Gervais will host the Golden Globes again

After stunning celebrities, viewers and censors alike with his previous three gigs hosting the Golden Globe Awards in 2010, 2011 and 2012, it looked like Ricky Gervais would not be back. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler took the reins the next three years. But Ricky is back. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association and NBC announced today that the funnyman will host the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards, airing live Jan. 10, 2016, on NBC. The press release says that Gervais “brought his acerbic sense of humor to Hollywood.” That’s an understatement. While his 2012 hosting job was considered a bit […]
