“The Great British Baking Show” makes U.S. premiere on PBS tonight

Following its huge success in the U.K. (where it is known as The Great British Bake Off and has become the highest-rated food show ever made in Britain), The Great British Baking Show is crossing the pond for 10 weeks starting tonight on PBS. The competition series features 12 passionate amateur bakers whose goal is to be the U.K.’s best. Each week, the bakers tackle a different skill, the difficulty of which increases as the competition […]

OWN debuts Michael Sam documentary, followed by new interview

He made history as the first openly gay player drafted into the NFL, and while Michael Sam hasn’t yet become the regular player he had hoped to be, and is currently a free agent, his story remains an inspiration, and a new documentary called Michael Sam, debuting tonight at 9pm ET/PT on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network, tells that story. (Originally planned as a multi-part series, Michael Sam was transitioned into a 90-minute documentary after shooting was postponed to allow Sam to focus on football.) Following the film, Oprah will speak exclusively to Sam in his first TV interview since being cut […]

2004 Indonesian tsunami remembered on NGC

Ten years ago, on Dec. 26, 2004, a tsunami devastated 14 countries and took a quarter of a million lives — the deadliest recorded tsunami in history. Anyone around at that time surely recalls the worldwide shock at the destruction, as well as the global humanitarian response it inspired. Now, a new National Geographic Channel (NGC) special will look into that past event and see if it gives us any clue for the future. The Next Mega Tsunami, premiering Dec. 26 at 9pm ET/PT on the network, finds scientists searching for clues along the tsunami-raaged coasts of Indonesia with the hope […]

24 Hours of A Christmas Story simulcast on TBS and TNT for first time

In 2014, Turner Networks is airing its 18th annual “24 Hours of A Christmas Story” programming event starting Christmas Eve at 8pm ET/PT and continuing until 8pm on Christmas Day. The running of the beloved 1983 film for 12 consecutive showings has become a holiday tradition for many; so much so, that this year, along with its usual airing on TBS, the marathon will also be simulcast on sister network TNT for the first time. This marks a homecoming of sorts for the film on TNT; when Turner Networks started this marathon in 1997, it originally aired on TNT before […]

Syfy gets in the holiday spirit with “Christmas Icetastrophe”

If anything, Syfy’s latest original movie, Christmas Icetastrophe, will give local newscasts a new term — “icetastrophe” — to add into their weather reports, along with “snowpocalypse” or “snowmageddon.” Given the film’s title, and tagline — “Don’t Get Iced” — it is surprisingly more serious than your average Syfy flick, and with not as many ice-related puns as I was expecting (I only noticed one, in fact, when a guy yells out “Chill!” just before getting crushed by a huge ice block). The movie takes place on Christmas in a small town in the mountains of Washington state. As the […]

Stephen Colbert gets an “immortal” sendoff

The rumors about the death of “Stephen Colbert” turned out to be greatly exaggerated. Leading up to last night’s final episode of The Colbert Report, some were speculating that Colbert may take the opportunity to “kill” off the right-wing pundit persona he had successfully portrayed on the show for nine years. This made sense especially when it was announced that “Grimmy” (The Grim Reaper, a show regular) would appear as the only “guest” on the finale. It also made sense in that, once that “Stephen Colbert” was gone, the real Colbert could proceed with his real personality (which did creep […]

Craig Ferguson says farewell to late night

This week has proven bittersweet for fans of late night. Last night, Stephen Colbert ended his run on Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report, as he gears up to replace the retiring David Letterman sometime next year. But not getting nearly has much hype this week is Craig Ferguson ending his stint as host of CBS’ The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson, which airs tonight. After nearly 10 years (Ferguson started the show on Jan. 3, 2005), Craig Ferguson announced his retirement from The Late Late Show back in April, a few weeks after Colbert was tapped by CBS to […]
