Shark Week 2013 is most-watched week in Discovery Channel history

Probably not too surprisingly, given the mega-ratings that the Megalodon special did for the network on the first night of Shark Week 2013, Discovery Channel has announced that Shark Week 2013 as a whole from Aug. 4-10 helped deliver the most-watched week (Aug. 5-11) in network history among Persons 18-49. Discovery reports that Shark Week 2013 was the most-watched Shark Week in the 26-year history of that franchise. This was across all key demos, including Persons, Men and Women 25-54/18-49/18-34. Even Discovery’s late-night talk show, Shark After Dark, was a program to beat last week. Discovery Channel says that Shark […]

Syfy series introduces the “Heroes of Cosplay”

It was only recently, after starting to hear the phrase more frequently, that I finally looked up what the term “cosplay” meant. It’s short for “costume play,” referring to a lifestyle in which participants engage in performance art of sorts wherein they, as the name suggests, dress up in costumes. These costumes usually represent a character from fiction, often from comic books, video games and movies. The cosplay lifestyle has developed such that there are now social networks and websites devoted to cosplay activities, and some cosplay figures have become almost as legendary as the characters they dress as. It […]

Although some fans on Twitter were bummed that Shark Week 2013 kicked off with a Mermaids-style “mockumentary” called Megalodon: The Monster Shark Lives, its premise nonetheless was enough to get them and many others tuned in. This week has turned into a real boon for fans of intense and dangerous natural phenomena. Last night, Discovery Channel kicked off its annual Shark Week event. And tonight, Aug. 5, The Weather Channel begins the latest installment of one of its themed programming blocks — Hurricane Week — which runs through Aug. 11. Now, with this clash of sharks and weather, I don’t want to hear any Sharknado jokes from you folks, even though The Weather Channel made a quip of that sort in its email announcing Hurricane Week. Realizing that they face formidable ratings competition from Shark Week, […]
