Michael Gross, Meredith Baxter stage a “Family” reunion on “Dan Vs.”

Michael Gross and Meredith Baxter have been seeing quite a lot of each other lately. The Family Ties stars, who spent seven seasons playing liberal Ohio parents Steven and Elyse Keaton on the NBC sitcom, got together on The Oprah Winfrey Show in March when Baxter was promoting her revealing new autobiography, Untied. The following month, they took part in a reunion with costars Michael J. Fox, Justine Bateman and Tina Yothers at the TV Land Awards. Now, the duo is working together again creatively in a pair of episodes of The Hub’s animated comedy Dan Vs., playing — surprise, […]

Classic “Looney Tunes” Characters Are Back For A New Generation

Everything old is new again in this age of Hollywood “reimagining,” so it was probably only a matter of time before the likes of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and other legendary Warner Bros. cartoon characters got their own update. This takes place in The Looney Tunes Show, a new animated series premiering May 3 on Cartoon Network. In the show, Bugs and Daffy are living together in the suburbs, and end up in more wacky adventures with fellow characters such as Porky Pig, Speedy Gonzales, Yosemite Sam, Foghorn Leghorn, the Tasmanian Devil, Marvin the Martian, Tweety, Sylvester, Granny and Daffy’s […]

VOD Spotlight: The compassionate supervillain of “Megamind”

All superheroes have their supervillains, but the title character in Megamind examines life from the perspective of the “bad guy.” Megamind is a cuddly blue alien baby who fell to Earth and landed in a prison where he was raised by convicts. Now an adult, Megamind believes it is his destiny to be evil and fight the “good” alien, Metro Man. But Metro Man (voiced by Brad Pitt) may not be as good as Megamind or the public believes. Conversely, Megamind may not be so evil.

Academy Awards: What are the odds?

By Tom Comi It seems that you can pretty much bet on anything these days, which means there is money to be had if you think you have a good feeling about how the 83rd annual Academy Awards show will go down Sunday. Even if you aren’t the gambling type, the odds we found on the website bodog.com do give a pretty strong indication as to who will be walking away with the little, golden statuettes this weekend. Granted, there are always upsets, but suffice it to say that the somewhat predictable outcomes for most of the major categories could […]

VOD Spotlight: Valuable “Despicable Me” time

By Mike Frey Who says bad guys never win? Pitted against the latest installments from Disney/Pixar’s and DreamWorks Animation’s signature series this summer, Universal’s Despicable Me held its own, finishing between Toy Story 3 and Shrek Forever After in domestic gross. The film performed well enough that a sequel is already in the works. While the movie was a box-office triumph, it was no small victory for parents looking for a decent movie to watch with their kids, either.

VOD Spotlight: On animating the “Owls of Ga’Hoole”

Acclaimed filmmaker Zack Snyder (Watchmen) makes his animation debut with the fantasy family adventure Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, based on the beloved Guardians of Ga’Hoole books by Kathryn Lasky. It’s a visually stunning story about young barn owls that are captured by a cult of owls that want to train them to become soldiers. The crew worked hard to capture the real look of owls in the animation. Production designer Simon Whiteley, who spent time at an owl sanctuary in England and became something of an owl expert during production, states, “When working with owls in […]

Ideas to get in the holiday mood from Phineas and Ferb

Phineas and Ferb, from the Disney Channel hit series, have provided us with some ways in which they would make Christmas extraordinary: Perry the Platypus Fruit Cake What says Christmas more than a fruit cake? Well, at Christmastime, Phineas and Ferb like to make a fruitcake in honor of someone who’s very special to them. Here’s what you do.  First, get a rectangular fruit cake, either homemade or store bought, and stick a graham cracker into it at one of the smaller ends.  On the opposite end, stick a quarter of a piece of orange peel. Now, and this part […]

Talking with Megatron (Frank Welker)

With Transformers Prime, The Hub has reinstated one of the cartoon world’s fiercest rivalries. No, not Optimus Prime vs. Megatron. That battle has been going on steadily throughout the franchise’s nearly 30-year reign. We’re talking about the men behind the giant robots, Peter Cullen, who voices Autobot leader Prime, and Frank Welker, who provides the signature sinister tones behind Decepticon leader Megatron. Both have worked on Transformers off and on since the original 1980s cartoon, but the new series — which is finishing up its five-part miniseries premiere “Darkness Rising” this week — is the first time they’ve worked together […]

Optimus Prime speaks: An interview with Peter Cullen of “Transformers Prime”

The main draw of Transformers — whether it be in an after-school cartoon or a blockbuster feature film — is that it features giant robots changing shapes. But a deeper appeal is what hasn’t changed. Peter Cullen first provided the voice of Autobot leader Optimus Prime in 1984 when Transformers (known to fans as the Generation 1 era) was created. Prime was killed off in the 1986 movie version of the series, a move that simultaneously confused Cullen and permanently scarred movie-going children everywhere. While Transformers continued in various forms over the next two decades in cartoons and video games, […]
