Taylor Swift talks CMA Awards, “Red,” “Ronan” and “Never Ever Getting Back Together”

By Jay Bobbin If it’s not officially the Season of Swift, it certainly is close. With her fourth album, Red, just out — and including “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” the first tune she’s placed at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100, though she’s been in that slot six times on the magazine’s country-song chart — Taylor Swift again is proving herself one of the most energetic, as well as creative, young talents in the entertainment world today. In a month that also sees her in the running for five honors in MTV2’s telecast of the MTV European […]

Seth MacFarlane + the Oscars might just work

It’s probably safe to say that while we were all watching Seth MacFarlane cluelessly begin a speech at the Emmys last week nearly half the stage away from a working mic, not many of us said to ourselves, “Yeah, that guy’s going to be hosting the Oscars next year.” Yet that’s the plan, and the announcement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had to bring a big smile to the faces of James Franco and Anne Hathaway, whose ill-conceived hosting stint two years back immediately took its place among the ceremony’s most infamous misfires. It’s not that MacFarlane […]

Emmys 2012 recap: “Homeland,” “Modern Family” win big

Jon Hamm is a loser. It’s not often you can write a story with that line in it, but when you’re talking about the Emmys, it’s a fact. Despite being the driving force behind one of the most acclaimed series in TV history, Don Draper has yet to take him Emmy gold. At the 64th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday, Hamm ran into a buzz saw headed up by Showtime’s terrorist drama Homeland, which finally unseated Mad Men as Outstanding Drama Series, and also secured Showtime’s first win in that prestigious category. Beyond that, however, the night went mostly […]

2012 MTV Movie Awards add power to the popcorn

The 2012 MTV Movie Awards (MTV, June 3) feature some new categories with a few others retired. You’ve probably noticed by now that the MTV Movie Awards aren’t exactly the most respected accolades in all of cinema (see photo). The gala has devolved into an annual tween girls’ fete for all things Twilight and a venue for Hollywood stars to sell their summer movies to an impressionable audience with disposable income. Thinking maybe it’s time to add a little more legitimacy to the quirky categories and comedy antics, MTV is polishing up this year’s awards show at the Gibson Amphitheatre […]
