12 things I learned from watching the Golden Globes

Here are a few things I learned from watching last night’s Golden Globes ceremony (many of them were things I didn’t know that I didn’t know, which is always a bonus): 1) Jodie Foster is retiring! UPDATE: She’s not retiring 2) Jodie Foster had apparently not already come out publicly (except she totally had) 3) Judging from the looks of Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd, production of Anchorman 2 must be in full swing. 4) Kevin Costner should really do the next Cormac McCarthy audiobook. 5) I really must see this Dog President movie 6) Thanking the other nominees was […]

Seth MacFarlane trying not to worry about “ruthless bit of scrutiny” that comes with Oscars gig

Although my body was remaining somewhat on Central Time, getting up at 4am in Los Angeles yesterday was still a pretty unnatural sensation for me. It felt somewhat surreal as myself and a colleague, and a handful of other TCA critics, left our Pasadena hotel in the pre-dawn, shuttled along on empty L.A. freeways, headed toward our destination — The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Beverly Hills, where a 5:30am press conference was to announce the nominees for the 85th Academy Awards, which air live on ABC Feb. 24. There, the buzz of excitement made the early […]

85th Academy Award nominations favor Spielberg, highlight “Beasts”

Spielberg, Day-Lewis, Washington … Quvenzhané? The nominations for the 85th Academy Awards, which were announced Thursday morning in Hollywood, contained some longtime favorites, as well as some surprising newcomers. Director Steven Spielberg’s towering Lincoln nabbed the most nominations with 12, followed closely by Ang Lee’s adaptation of Life of Pi with 11. The rest of the Best Picture field includes expected titles like Argo, Les Miserables and Zero Dark Thirty, but also some shocking party crashers like the indie fantasy Beasts of the Southern Wild and director Michael Haneke’s punishing drama Amour. The main snubs come in the directing category, […]

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler host Golden Globes 2013

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler host Golden Globes 2013 in the annual ceremony presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Move over, Ricky Gervais. Make way for Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. Tina Fey set social media all abuzz when she hilariously videobombed Amy Poehler (video above) at the 2012 Golden Globes. Poehler swapped Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ acceptance speech for hers at last year’s Emmys (video below), and spoofed beauty pageants at the Emmys the year before (video way below). Here’s an idea: Maybe Fey and Poehler should host one of these things someday. Fortunately, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association took […]

Golden Globes nominations: “Lincoln” and HBO lead the way

Abraham Lincoln’s fortune at the theater appears to be taking a turn for the better, because the Steven Spielberg-directed biography bearing his name was nominated this morning for seven Golden Globes. HBO continues to set the bar on the small screen as it raked in 17 nominations total for its original movies (Game Change, The Girl and Hemingway & Gellhorn), dramas (Boardwalk Empire and The Newsroom) and comedies (Veep and Girls). Although the Golden Globes are considered controversial by many — the voting is limited to roughly 90 members of the foreign press — they do serve as an indicator of […]
