Oscar fallout: Did Brett Ratner really mean to slam gays?

By Tom Comi Follow @ChannelGuide Words hurt. I don’t think anybody can dispute that sentiment, and we are constantly reminded of it through PSAs by the cast of Glee. But sometimes I wonder if we have become too politically correct for the sake of doing so, and one need look no further than what is going on with the 2012 telecast of the Academy Awards as evidence of that. For those not following along, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences decided many months ago that it wanted its next Oscars telecast to be cutting-edge and energetic. They hired […]

Power to the pooches: Hero Dog Awards air Friday on Hallmark Channel

By Jacqueline Cutler Follow @TMSJackCut When an earthquake leaves shards of buildings in its path, or a wildfire tears through a neighborhood and only hulks of dryers and chimneys still stand, or when a blind or deaf person needs to be steered toward safety, dogs come to the rescue. Please, cat fanciers, don’t start the usual protest. Dogs are heroes. Not all dogs, just like not all humans, qualify as heroic. But the dogs celebrated on Hallmark Channel’s American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards (Friday, Nov. 11, at 8pm ET) at are magnificent examples. The 90-minute special, hosted by Carson […]

How the stars reacted to the Emmys on Twitter

By Jeff Pfeiffer Follow @ChannelGuideJP Here is a selection of some of what the stars — nominees and observers — had to say, and a few of their pics, about last night’s Emmy Awards presentation via Twitter. All tweets are presented [sic]. Jane Lynch (@jamemarielynch), nominated for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series as Sue Sylvester in “Glee,” and a first-time Emmy host — “EMMY RED CARPET all poised for the show! Mama is nervous!” Rainn Wilson (@RainnWilson), star of “The Office”; not nominated — “The world of TV should be ashamed of itself that Steve Carell never won an […]

Best Emmy Award speeches and comments include Jon Hamm, Jane Lynch, Julianna Margulies, Charlie Sheen & More

I so wanted Jane Lynch to be a great host on last night’s 63rd Emmy Awards on Fox. She seemed to have all of the right ingredients going in: a great sense of humor, infinite spunk and a likability with stars and fans alike. Unfortunately, it didn’t work. From a very lame opening song medley to a boring Jersey Shore sketch to hit-or-miss jokes (more on the hits later), Lynch was sadly miscast. Throw in some really bad ideas (including a very weak celebrity singing group) and a lot of predictability with the winners — Jon Stewart again, really? — […]

Jane Lynch talks about hosting the Emmys

By Stacey Harrison Follow @ChannelGuideSRH Whatever opinions people may have about the field of Emmy Award nominees (Hugh Laurie, again?), just about everyone is happy that Jane Lynch is hosting the ceremony, which airs live on FOX Sunday at 8pm. Lynch, who is also nominated for supporting actress in a comedy, spoke with reporters recently to talk about what surprises she has in store for the telecast (don’t be surprised to see some of her Glee costars show up), and how her Glee alter ego Sue Sylvester might handle the gig: On her biggest worry as host: “What I’m concerned […]

Will Eddie Murphy make a good Oscar host?

There is rarely a day when I am with my friends on the golf course that at least one of us doesn’t quote a line from one of Eddie Murphy’s stand-up routines or classic movies. So why then am I not more excited that my favorite comedian ever has been chosen to host the Oscars in February? I guess there are a couple of reasons, the first being that I can’t remember the last time he was funny outside of voicing the donkey in the Shrek movies. After brilliant performances in films like 48 Hrs., Trading Places, Beverly Hills Cop, […]

Emmy analysis: why the Academy can never get it exactly right

By Lori Acken And so another round of Emmy nominations has been unveiled … and with it, the usual flurry of cheers and jeers and outright outrage that summarily blankets the blogosphere and other media outlets. I’m tasked with adding a few thought-flakes to the pile. This is pretty funny to me because out of the entire editorial staff, I am probably least likely to get myself worked up about who’s in and who’s out — except for the strange scheduling decisions that led to no Breaking Bad nor anyone in it being nominated for anything. That right there makes […]
