TCA: CW brings Matt Ryan’s John Constantine to “Arrow”

At The CW’s executive session at the Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour today, the network announced that Matt Ryan, late of NBC’s Constantine, will be reprising his role of John Constantine in a one-shot episode of Arrow (the fifth episode of the hit show’s upcoming fourth season, called “Haunted”). Both Constantine and Green Arrow are DC properties (Constantine from the book Hellblazer), and this crossover should give some amount of satisfaction to the fans who were dismayed when NBC pulled the plug on Constantine. Also of note, The CW is developing a series based on the hit romantic film The Notebook, with the input of […]

TCA: Will CBS’ Supergirl crossover with CW’s Flash and Arrow?

At CBS’ panel for the new series Supergirl at this morning’s Television Critics Association (TCA) panel, executive producer Greg Berlanti (The Flash, Arrow) said that he grew up worshipping the Superman films directed by Richard Donner. That is clear upon watching the pilot of his new series, which maintains the same type of fun and epic style as those earlier blockbusters (and will even include one of the memorable villains seen in Donner’s Superman II). With Berlanti’s other DC Comics TV hits on The CW sharing the same corporate parent as CBS’ Supergirl, a logical question, and probably one in the minds of many comics fans, came […]

“Daredevil” an effectively dark entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Sure, colorfully outfitted superheroes soaring to great heights, wielding magic hammers, wearing iron suits and engaging in fisticuffs of the innocuous, blood-free comic-book sort are great fun to see on the big screen, hence the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and its box-office blockbusters like The Avengers, Captain America, et al. But once in a while, as comics fans know, it’s also fascinating to get down to street level, and all the grittiness and life-or-death battles down there. Covering those more (sometimes brutally) real adventures is the goal of a batch of Marvel Netflix series based on those more down-and-dirty heroes, the […]

Big night for AMC! Few program notes for Walking Dead, Talking Dead, Better Call Saul

Tonight is a HUGE night on AMC. It’s the return of the second half of Season 5 of The Walking Dead and the premiere of the highly anticipated Breaking Bad prequel — Better Call Saul. It also involves a slight change in the network’s long standing Sunday lineup (but just for tonight), as Talking Dead moves to a later slot. Here’s a quick breakdown of how things shake out tonight (Sunday, Feb. 8). When does Talking Dead air tonight? We’ve gotten a lot of questions surrounding this already about people not liking the break between Walking Dead and Talking Dead […]

The Walking Dead returns Sunday: Can the group regroup in the wake of new losses?

Quick catch-up, Walking Dead fans. When Season 5 reached its wrenching midseason finale in November, we’d lost Bob and Beth, the safety of the church and all hope for a cure in Washington, D.C., to assorted bad decision-making — and discovered we hadn’t lost Morgan (Lennie James) after all. So what does that mean for the Grimes crew moving forward — especially poor Maggie (Lauren Cohan), who has watched every last member of her family die horribly? “We’re going to see Maggie in a way that we’ve never seen her and, I think, fighting a dark side that she’s always […]

Netflix releases teaser trailer for “Marvel’s Daredevil”

It’s becoming a golden age for superheroes not only on the big screen — with Marvel’s cinematic universe doing gangbusters at the box office in recent years, including this year’s Avengers: Age of Ultron poised to explode, and DC looking to emulate that starting next year with Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice — but also on the small screen, with hits like The Flash and Arrow on The CW, and CBS’ upcoming Supergirl. Netflix is also getting into the superhero game beginning with the original series Marvel’s Daredevil, with 13 one-hour episodes premiering on April 10 at 12:01am PT (in all territories where Netflix is available), streaming in 4K. Netflix released the teaser […]

Is Arrow’s Oliver Queen really dead? Stephen Amell gives some insights

Is Arrow‘s Oliver Queen really dead? We talk to star Stephen Amell about Oliver Queen’s supposed death, his favorite upcoming episode and more … but let’s take a moment to talk about how we got here. The Season 3 midseason finale of Arrow left fans aghast when the beloved Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) took a throat punch from Ra’s al Ghul (Matt Nable) that sent him to his knees in a trial by combat. [Major spoilers ahead.] As Ra’s approached Oliver he said in a soft whisper, “Don’t be afraid my son, death comes for us all. You can only […]

Interview with Hayley Atwell (A.K.A.) Marvel’s Agent Carter

Marvel’s Agent Carter starring Hayley Atwell begins on ABC Tuesday, Jan. 6 at 8pm ET/PT. Imagine this pitch meeting between Marvel and ABC: “Let’s do an eight-part series about a supporting character from one of our earlier films … a woman with no superpowers. By the way, it’ll take place in the 1940s.” In any other world, this idea would sound ludicrous. Thankfully, Marvel isn’t just any other world, and Agent Carter isn’t just any other show. “She’s a very relatable character,” says London-born Hayley Atwell, who first breathed life into Peggy Carter on the big screen in Captain America: […]

ABC special looks at history of Marvel Comics

After filing for bankruptcy in the 1990s, Marvel has had a renaissance in recent years, largely thanks to its enormously popular Marvel Cinematic Universe of overlapping films featuring some of the most popular superheroes in comic-book history (which made big news last week with the announcement of Phase 3 of that film universe, with a number of titles slated over the next several years). It took a long time — 75 years, to be exact — for Marvel Comics to reach this point, but it’s a fascinating history, and one that will be explored in the one-hour ABC special Marvel: […]

7 Questions With...

7 Questions with … Josh McDermitt of The Walking Dead

As those of us who’ve earnestly studied The Walking Dead Season 5 trailer know well, so much depends on a mullet-sporting doctor. At least it sure seems that way. With most of the Grimes Gang — plus Dr. Eugene Porter (Josh McDermitt) and his faithful security detail Rosita Espinosa (Christian Serratos) and Sgt. Abraham Ford (Michael Cudlitz) — trapped in a Terminus train car by the possibly people-eating Gareth (Andrew J. West) and his fellow Terminans, Porter’s insistence that a cure awaits in Washington, D.C. appears to be the group’s only salvation. That’s not lost on McDermitt, who along with […]
