The music of “Glee”: Throwdown

Not only did we get five songs this week, we got some variety, with four vocalists sharing the spotlight. Sure, two were Rachel (Lea Michele) and Finn (Cory Monteith), who we hear every week. But we also heard lead vocals from Mercedes (Amber Riley), which is always a treat, and our first featured song for Quinn (Dianna Agron) since her brief glee club audition for Mr. Schuester. Here’s what we thought of each performance. Tensions were high when Mercedes and the rest of Sue Sylvester’s half of New Directions sang “Hate on Me” by Jill Scott, and the kids really […]

Monty Python to reunite LIVE onstage … well, mostly

by Karl J. Paloucek If you’re like a lot of Monty Python fans, chances are you don’t have an invite for the troupe’s 40th anniversary reunion at the Ziegfeld Theatre in New York City. (If you do, ya wanna sell it?) Short of being able to attend, you still can watch the event as it unfolds, as it will stream live on both IFC.com and PythOnline.com. It’s been more than 10 years since the five surviving members of Monty Python — John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin — reunited for one of these events. (Fans […]

Zach Braff: Zach Braff is not dead

A rampant Internet rumor on Monday reported that Scrubs star Zach Braff had died after purposely OD’ing on pills. The star himself turned up to quash the rumor, taking time from shooting the new title sequence for Scrubs (“which is a little bit like dying,” he said) to prove he is alive and well. He turns the camera over to pal and costar Donald Faison for his rendition of “Wind Beneath My Wings,” which Braff says Faison has agreed to sing at his actual funeral. Someday. The originator of the rumor says it was all a big misunderstanding.

The music of “Glee”: Vitamin D

One episode + four songs = two performances. That can mean only one thing — mash-ups! Thanks to New Directions’ complacency while rehearsing for sectionals, Mr. Schuester devises a competition between the boys and the girls in the club to see who can create the best mash-up. The result is probably the most satisfying set of performances since the series’ first episode. The guys are up first, with Finn (Cory Monteith) and Artie (Kevin McHale) trading lead vocals on a mash-up of Bon Jovi’s “It’s My Life” and Usher’s “Confessions Part II.”

“How I Met Your Mother” recap: Robin 101

By Mike Frey Synopsis: Since Barney hasn’t exactly been a boyfriend in a while, it’s no surprise that he’s bad at it. He’s unsupportive and he’s so used to not sleeping over that he tries sleepwalking his way down the fire escape to get away from Robin. Luckily, Ted knows everything there is to know about Robin — or at least he thinks he does — and he needs to practice his teaching. So Barney enrolls in Robin 101: How to Date Robin Scherbatsky, taught by none other than Professor Mosby. Unfortunately for Barney, the study sessions are about as […]

“The Office” recap: The Promotion

By Mike Frey After the events of last week’s episode, Jim and Michael are settling into their positions as co-managers of the Dunder Mifflin Scranton branch. Understandably, there’s a bit of friction. Jim thinks Michael should waste less of his employee’s time with meetings about toilet paper that devolve into discussions about the planets (think Uranus). Michael is upset that he’s no longer the undisputed leader of the office. Plus, as Dwight notes, Jim’s not as matronly as Phyllis. So there’s that. A power struggle ensues, rivaling the rivalries of Paris and Nicole, and Heidi and L.C. The issue comes […]

The music of “Glee”: The Rhodes Not Taken

Last week the pickings were slim. This week reminds us of the season premiere of Saturday Night Live — musical performances are everywhere. And in this case it’s not because the show has nothing to offer aside from an accidental f-bomb and Megan Fox’s looks. (Seriously, U2. Three songs?) “The Rhodes Not Taken” offers up no less than four musical numbers, plus guest star Kristin Chenoweth (Pushing Daisies). The first song of the episode is a joint performance by Rachel (Lea Michele) and April (Chenoweth) of “Maybe This Time” by Liza Minnelli from the 1972 film Cabaret. Given Chenoweth’s Broadway background, […]

“How I Met Your Mother” Recap: Double Date

By Mike Frey Synopsis: This episode tells the story of two blind dates taken by Ted seven years apart. Although it might as well have been one, since the dates were the same in every way: same restaurant, same conversation, same girl. Despite the familiarity, neither Ted nor his date Jen (played by guest star Lindsay Sloane, who we love) realize what’s going on until halfway through the evening. Once they realize that they’ve lapped the whole dating field, they decided to give each other insight that might help them avoid the dating mistakes that have kept them single since […]

“Psych” Recap: High Top Fade Out

An action chase opens “High Top Fade Out,” the latest episode of USA’s Psych. A preppy man on a bicycle pedals frantically away from a sketchy car driven by gun-toting thugs. The chase leads to an alley where the man loses control of the bike. He sets off on foot, acrobatically leaping up a fire escape ladder, and makes it into his apartment, where he has just enough time to upload and email some kind of video before the thugs bust the door open and strangle him. A surprisingly intense and violent opening (Who directed this episode? Michael Bay!?), but […]
