UnREAL episode 2 recap: We’re having a ball! And a baby! And a funeral!

In last week’s UnREAL series premiere, we learned plenty of the not-so-secrets that got Rachel Goldberg booted from — and invited back to — the Everlasting set. This week, we learn that secrets abound in the Everlasting control room — and not just in Dr. Wagerstein’s folder. And they go a long way in explaining why some of these folks have no problem waging war on love for the sake of a paycheck. Namely, their own broken hearts. We start the episode with an interesting lesson in on-the-fly hygiene from the intrepid Rachel (toothpaste as pit-freshener!) who has apparently taken up […]

Jill Kargman’s Odd Mom Out is raw summer fun

Jill Kargman talks a witty mile a minute, all unfiltered. The Upper East Side New Yorker is the author of Momzillas (now in 14 languages) and a slew of other fun reads. She’s mastered the art of satire when it comes to the uber-wealthy, exploiting their over-the-top, competitive parenting (while still maintaining friendships with them — as she is the daughter of former Chanel chairman Arie Kopelman). It was a given to extend her brazen candor into television in Bravo’s new scripted series Odd Mom Out, which begins Monday, June 8 at 10pm ET. Kargman serves as executive producer, writer […]

Interview With “Max & Shred” star Jake Goodman

As Season 2 of Max & Shred films in Toronto, I had a chance to chat with the YTV/ Nickelodeon series stars, Jake Goodman and Jonny Gray, who play Alvin “Shred” Ackerman and Max Asher, respectively. Both actors are consummate professionals — dedicating lots of time to their craft — but they’re also regular kids who study hard in school and love to have fun when they’re not shooting. Jake and I chatted about his early start in the ‘biz and some of the fun that goes on behind the scenes with his costars. He and Jonny also each answered 7 […]

Another Period — Comedy Central pokes fun at the Kardashians of the past

Comedy Central’s latest scripted series, Another Period, is a sort of Downton Abbey for people who loathe Downton Abbey — messy, ribald and hilarious, but also surprisingly well researched. Series stars and longtime pals Natasha Leggero and Riki Lindhome (Garfunkel and Oates), who created the show from a short film they made with the same premise, spent time in the show’s Newport, R.I., home base to get a feel for the era and setting in which their turn-of-the-century socialite sisters Lillian and Beatrice Bellacourt lived. Then they threw a big ol’ voyeur-TV bomb right in the middle of all that gentility. “Riki and I had actually […]

Nickelodeon Presents “Genie in a Bikini”

UPDATE: Due to the movie’s Memorial Day success, Nickelodeon will re-air Genie in a Bikini Friday (5/29) at 8pm ET & Sunday (5/31) at 3pm ET.  Tonight on Nickelodeon, the lives of two kids turn magically wacky when they uncover a genie … in a bikini. This is a movie. And not with this Genie: THIS Genie.   Also, do not confuse Genie in a Bikini with Genie in a String Bikini. Just don’t. According to Nickelodeon, “kids Jacob and Cruz want nothing more than to be in with the popular crowd. This quest seems impossible until they discover a […]

UnREAL — New Lifetime dramedy examines the harsh reality of reality TV

UnREAL premieres Monday, June 1 at 10/9CT on Lifetime. Can you be a feminist and still love The Bachelor? Better question: Can you be a feminist and admit to loving The Bachelor? Best question of all: Can you be a feminist and actually work on The Bachelor? It’s a lot to digest — just ask writer/producer/director Sarah Gertrude Shapiro. When Shapiro was in her early twenties, she spent a few years working as a producer on ABC’s reality behemoth during its fourth and fifth seasons (that’s the disastrous “Bob and Estella” and “Jesse and Jessica” for those of you keeping score). […]
