FX orders 90 more episodes of Charlie Sheen hit “Anger Management”

In what might be one of the more optimistic moves ever by a network, FX is banking that Charlie Sheen will behave himself long enough to produce 90 more episodes of his new hit sitcom Anger Management. The massive pickup is part of the original deal that stipulated if the series — which stars Sheen as an anger-management counselor still struggling with the issue himself — kept its ratings at a certain level over eight of the first 10 episodes, then 90 more would follow. Anger Management, which debuted in June, is the highest-rated new comedy series on cable this […]

Showtime’s “Episodes” needs some tweaks heading into season 3

There’s was a scene in Sunday’s season 2 finale of Episodes in which a writer reveals that his pilot about an English couple coming to America to do a sitcom is picked up. The show would revolve around the couple having to produce their struggling series despite going through an uncomfortable divorce. Sounds pretty lame, huh? Regretfully, that fictitious premise is exactly what we got from Showtime’s sophomore campaign of Episodes. Although still funny and worth watching at times, the ludicrous plots made one of my favorite TV programs unwatchable more often than not. And the real shame is it […]

VOD Spotlight: Bringing “Think Like a Man” to the screen

Few people who see a self-help book think to themselves, “Gee, that would make a terrific movie!” but when producer Will Packer (Stomp the Yard, Obsessed) noticed Steve Harvey’s book Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man in women’s hands, his filmmaker’s curiosity was piqued. “Everywhere I went I would see women with this book and it intrigued me, so I had to find out about it. I read the book,” says Packer. “I didn’t know Steve was giving away all the secrets. After my initial reaction of ‘Steve, what are you doing?’ I thought that this would make […]

VOD Spotlight: “The Pirates! Band of Misfits”: a ship-to-shore-up operation

Working on a stop-motion animation film like The Pirates! Band of Misfits presents its own brand of troubles. One major problem the filmmakers encountered on this particular set was the fact that the action was to take place largely at sea, but they were to shoot in a studio setting — which meant they had to devise themselves water. “How do we make the pirate ship sail with no water?” Morgan Roe, the mechanical engineer on the film, asked at the time. “It may be shocking, but ships don’t just rock. They rock, they roll, and they rise and fall; […]

“Scrubs” buddies reunite as Zach Braff guest stars on Donald Faison’s new show, “The Exes”

Zach Braff is playing a sports star and a ladies’ man. To fans of Scrubs — where for nine years Braff played the appletini-guzzling, sports deficient J.D. — this is heady news indeed. Braff’s against-type performance will reunite him with “Brown Bear” himself, Donald Faison, on Faison’s TV Land sitcom The Exes, for an Aug. 29 episode. Faison plays Phil, a sports agent who represents Braff’s character, a tennis star and a “hound dog with the ladies.” Faison wasn’t saying much about the story line beyond that, but he did talk about working with his old co-star, who is also […]

Matthew Perry on new Fall TV series “Go On” – sneak peek tomorrow

By Jay Bobbin NBC is leading the charge into the fall television season early, and Matthew Perry is the familiar face at the front of the pack. Not surprisingly, the network is using its Summer Olympics coverage as a launchpad for its new programming lineup … starting with its sneak peek of Friends alum Perry’s seriocomic show Go On Wednesday, Aug. 8. He plays a sportscaster ordered into therapy after his wife’s death, and among the moments of Chandler Bing-like humor are more serious reminders of Perry’s guest turn last season on The Good Wife. In tackling regular series work […]

W. Kamau Bell gets “Totally Biased” for FX

You might not know W. Kamau Bell, but if all goes according to plan, you’ll know exactly what you’re getting with his new late-night talk show. It’s all there in the title. Totally Biased With W. Kamau Bell — from executive producer Chris Rock (or as Bell calls him, “foulmouthed Yoda”) — puts Bell’s political persuasion front and center. Er, front and left, actually. It’s “comedy from a not even left-leaning, but left-laying-on-the-ground perspective,” Bell says. While he was still figuring out the exact format of his show when we talked, objectivity will most certainly not be a part of […]
