The show must go on without Sheen

By Tom Comi Can we please put an end to the ridiculous ideas going around about everybody from John Stamos to Rob Lowe replacing Charlie Sheen on the CBS hit Two and a Half Men? No one person can fill those shoes or multiple personalities, so I had another thought I’d like to throw out to CBS. Remember when David Letterman went through his heart surgery several years ago? Well, instead of airing repeats or finding one person to temporarily replace him, the network went with different guest hosts every night to man the ship. With that in mind, I […]

VOD Spotlight: “Jackass 3”

So you think your kid is crazy? In 1997, aspiring lunatic Philip John “PJ” Clapp shot himself in the chest with a .38-caliber revolver to test the strength of a bulletproof vest. But according to his mother, the man who would change his name to Johnny Knoxville was apparently crazed from early childhood. The toddler who would climb out of his playpen and throw himself on the floor “matured” into a teen who reportedly dove out of a second-floor hotel window into the pool. Jackass, the TV series and the films, worried Knoxville’s mom, Lemoyne Clapp, who says she hopes […]

VOD Spotlight: “Morning Glory”

There is a great tradition of comedies featuring ambitious young women, from the 1940 film His Girl Friday to the modern dramedy Working Girl. In Morning Glory, the comedy is set in the frequently funny world of morning news broadcasts. It stars Rachel McAdams as Becky Fuller, a talented television producer who tries to make peace between an egotistical news reporter (Harrison Ford) and a morning show host (Diane Keaton) so she can turn the falling ratings around. “If you’ve seen any clips on YouTube, you know that morning news is full of some of the most absurdly hysterical stuff […]

Forecast on “Mr. Sunshine” still looks cloudy

By Tom Comi One of the toughest things about watching TV is determining how many episodes you are willing to give a new show before deciding if you are going to add it to your coveted weekly viewing calendar. That’s the dilemma I am currently facing with the comedy Mr. Sunshine (tonight, 9:30 pm ET). I’ve always been a fan of both Matthew Perry and Allison Janney, so I was excited when ABC announced that they were appearing together in show about the folks who run the day-to-day operations at a sports/entertainment arena. I would be lying, however, if I […]

Razzie Awards to be held tomorrow

You won’t seem them on TV (even though they seem to be ready-made to be presented as an hourlong special for Comedy Central, Spike or IFC; and they do have a YouTube channel), the Golden Raspberry Awards (aka “Razzies”) will be having their 31st installment tomorrow at a ceremony in Hollywood. These hilarious awards — which celebrate the worst in film from the past year — are traditionally held the night before the Oscar ceremony, and are sort of the anti-Academy Awards. Each of this year’s 10 categories has five nominees (it could be argued that the Razzies should expand […]

Has Charlie Sheen lost his shine?

There’s always been the great debate about whether life imitates art or if it’s the other way around, but the fact that there seems to be so many similarities between Charlie Sheen’s personal life and that of his character on Two and a Half Men could very well lead to the show’s ultimate downfall. We’re not going to rehash the bickering that has been going on back and forth between Sheen and show creator Chuck Lorre (you can read that elsewhere), but suffice it to say that it had a lot to do with the plug being pulled on the […]
