Boardwalk Empire Season 4 premiere recap: “New York Sour”

From the get-go of Season 4 of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, we are reminded of why there is little else like this on television. It is a nighttime exterior shot, a restaurant in a remote part of America awash in a snowstorm, so lushly designed and framed it might be a Hopper painting. It is just as rich a painting inside, where two cold-eyed types in suits and hats sit at the counter, while a distracted owner listens to barely tuned-in strains of radio. When the bigger, talkier one starts needling the owner, we feel something pointless and violent could happen […]

The Newsroom recap: “Election Night, Part 1”

In “Election Night, Part 1,” the penultimate episode of Season 2 of HBO’s The Newsroom, it is, indeed, election night 2012, the culmination of two largely wasted years of presidential campaigning, with Barack Obama soon to hand Mitt Romney his own ass with a choice of two sides. But that’s not important right now. Because the confounding, long, thorny, pointlessly abusive thing between News Night anchor Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels) and his executive producer Mackenzie McHale (Emily Mortimer) is coming to a head with what appears to be a whimper versus the firing squad both she and I think the […]

“Exploding Sun”: Reelz movie unleashes a big fireball of cheese

With Reelz’s spate of disaster-themed movies and miniseries that it’s rolled out this year, the temptation has been to write them all off as hopelessly cheesy cash-ins and retreads. Yet while Ring of Fire, Eve of Destruction, Delete and CAT. 8 certainly have all had their moments of camp, none has really quite tread into Syfy Original Movie territory. As much as we might like it to be different, there can only be one Sharknado. But for better or worse, Exploding Sun might finally earn that reputation. It’s not so much the premise, which admittedly does smack a bit of Airplane II: The Sequel. […]

“Anarchy Afterword”: FX’s “Sons of Anarchy” gets post-episode talk show

Those who have a hard time coming down after each hard-hitting, intense episode of Sons of Anarchy will no longer have to ride through this world all alone. When Sons of Anarchy Season 6 debuts Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 10pm on FX, it will be followed immediately by Anarchy Afterword, a live web post-show hosted by comedian Chris Franjola (Chelsea Lately) from the SOA set. Visit anarchyafterword.com for uncensored interviews with Sons creator Kurt Sutter, and a revolving roster of cast members. The format follows the popular Talking Dead and Talking Bad on AMC, meaning the comedian host (named Chris) will […]

“Last Tango in Halifax” tells story of a late-blooming love

Last Tango in Halifax Sunday, Sept. 8 PBS, 8pm It’s never too late for love to bloom as this charming yet gritty six-episode series shows. Thankfully it eschews most of the aren’t-old-people-cute clichés that could have made the tale of Alan (Derek Jacobi) and Celia (Anne Reid), who meet up some 60 years after they went to school together and promptly decide to get married, insufferable. This has unforeseen consequences on each of their families, namely their grown daughters (Sarah Lancashire, Nicola Walker) who have serious relationship issues of their own. Jacobi and Reid deliver masterful performances, and it’s incredibly […]

Sons of Anarchy Season 6: Date, time, TV channel, preview and more!

Sons of Anarchy Season 6 Tuesday, Sept. 10 FX, 10pm As we go through Sons of Anarchy Season 6, I’ll do my best to keep from overusing a really cool word — “penultimate.” Even though, hey, it’s totally appropriate, seeing as it means “next to last,” and creator Kurt Sutter has assured us the tale of SAMCRO will end after Season 7. That’s another reason not to use “penultimate,” because I don’t really need or want any reminders that one of my favorite shows has an end in sight. Although as sad as it will be to see Sons of […]

“American Horror Story: Coven” releases another creepy teaser

The marketing geniuses at American Horror Story: Coven have released another enigmatic teaser for the FX series, which premieres Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 10pm ET/PT. Before we had a bunch of women’s bodies suspended (or hanged?) as a creepy rendition of “House of the Rising Sun” kicked in. It was only 17 seconds, but quite memorable. Here, there is some definite Salem Witch Trial imagery on display, what with the burning and the stakes and all. It’s slightly longer, at 21 seconds, but no more informative. Still no sign of Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Lily Rabe, Sarah Paulson, Taissa Farmiga, […]

The Newsroom recap: Episode 2.7 Red Team III

Sunday night’s episode of HBO’s The Newsroom saw Don (Thomas Sadoski) take his turn in front of a high-priced legal team led by Rebecca (Marcia Gay Harden) debriefing the ACN team on what went wrong with their season-long investigation into a U.S. Marine mission called Operation Genoa, wherein chemical weapons were allegedly used. Last week, we finally saw the cardinal sin that poisoned the well, main-chance-pursuing producer Jerry Dantana’s selective editing of a key interview to gird the story, but Episode 7 finally revealed what the these debriefings framing this season have been all about. Throw to Don: “A producer […]
