“Sons of Anarchy” recap: Andare Pescare

I wasn’t cool enough to know the exact translation of tonight’s Sons of Anarchy episode (being a monolingual ‘Merican and all), but I did know enough to figure out that it had something to do with fish. “Sleep with the fishes” would’ve been appropriate, especially given the heavy mob connection that follows, but it turns out it’s closer to “gone fishing.” That said, there are no literal fish to speak of, just a lot of metaphorical fishing as Jax moves in on getting the proof he needs that Clay is the mastermind behind the renegade Nomads. The hunt for Frankie […]

“SEAL Team Six: The Raid on Osama bin Laden” premieres on NGC Nov. 4

There have been a few documentaries chronicling the May 2011 raid by SEAL Team Six that led to the killing of Osama bin Laden, and now we are coming to a point where feature-length dramatic films are being made on the subject. Next month, the film Zero Dark Thirty, directed by Kathryn Bigelow, will be released in theaters. But before that, National Geographic Channel (NGC) will be airing on the small screen SEAL Team Six: The Raid on Osama bin Laden, making its world premiere on the network this Sunday, Nov. 4, at 8pm ET/PT. While some Republican supporters believe […]

“Sons of Anarchy” recap: “Ablation”

I love it when TV teaches me something new. You know, like the title of tonight’s Sons of Anarchy. I wasn’t exactly sure what “ablation” meant, but it doesn’t sound real positive, does it? Turns out it essentially means the removal of something harmful to the body via surgery. Hmm, yeah, this could get ugly. So, just to get it out of the way, the kids are OK. Poor Abel has to undergo a bit of surgery but hey, after what that kid’s been through already, he shouldn’t be too worse for wear. But the real suspense is with Gemma. […]

“7 Questions” With … Winter Ave Zoli of “Sons of Anarchy”

Winter Ave Zoli has managed to parlay what was originally a quickie guest spot into a full-fledged recurring role on the smash FX biker drama Sons of Anarchy. Her character Lyla’s tragic romance with Opie ended this season, but Lyla remains a part of the SAMCRO family, turning up for some quality screen time in tonight’s episode. Zoli, who can also currently be seen costarring with Kenneth Branagh in the short film “Prodigal,” part of the Stars in Shorts feature film, took some time to answer our “7 Questions.” You’re at a magazine rack and can only pick three titles. […]

“Sons of Anarchy” recap: “Toad’s Wild Ride”

Those music montages toward the end of episodes are never a good sign, are they? Yeah, when I noticed there was about 10 minutes left and the unmistakable first notes of Iggy Pop and The Stooges’ “The Passenger” came on, I knew that “Toad’s Wild Ride” had yet to deliver its biggest jolt. But more on that later. Clay is in full damage-control mode with his Nomad flunkies, telling them there is DNA evidence that will link them to the home invasions and the murder of Roosevelt’s wife. Frankie (Chuck Zito, who you just knew was going to be a […]

VOD Spotlight: “Magic Mike” a slice of Channing Tatum’s life

Sometimes casting a role in a film can be easy. In the case of Steven Soderbergh’s Magic Mike, Channing Tatum was a natural choice for the lead role — it was in part due to his experience as a stripper that the film was made in the first place. “I mentioned that I’d worked as a stripper for eight months when I was 18 and 19 years old,” Tatum recalls. “I’ve always thought about doing a story about that life because whenever the subject comes up, guys always want to know about it. ‘How’d you get into it? What was […]

With “Hunted,” Cinemax moves into more mature original programming

When Strike Back and Femme Fatales premiered, ushering in Cinemax‘s foray into original programming, they seemed like exactly the kinds of shows Cinemax would come up with. The production values, acting and story lines were improved, but they fit right into the lineup of a network derisively (or affectionately) known as Skinemax. They took the formula of shameless titillation and added slam-bang action, with stellar results. But with Hunted, which premieres tonight at 10pm, Cinemax seems to have grown up a bit. Yes, you’ll still get some side boob (and more) here and there, but this atmospheric spy thriller is […]

“Sons of Anarchy” recap: “Small World”

Clay, you dirty bastard. Been awhile since I’ve been able to say that. Feels kinda good, in a weird way that only Sons of Anarchy can produce. Yes, tonight we saw that Clay indeed has been playing possum, using that oxygen tube in his nose to great effect, making everyone think the old wolf had turned into a harmless cub. But he may be hatching his most horrible plan yet. More on that later. After last week’s relatively lighthearted jaunt, we’re back in the dumps right away as Sheriff Roosevelt is in the hospital attending to his injured wife. Now, […]

ABC Family to air world premiere of “The Notebook” special edition

I get daily social media reports telling me what people are buzzing about online in terms of primetime TV watching on any given night. And any time that ABC Family airs the 2004 tearjerker film The Notebook, I can rest assured that I will see it turn up in that report somewhere in the Top 10. Something about that film, its story and its performances has gotten to audiences so much that they still can’t stop tuning in, and certainly can’t stop talking about it (or tweeting about it). There will be even more to talk, tweet and post about […]

VOD Spotlight: the eerie truth behind “Chernobyl Diaries”

You have to admit that it’s a pretty creepy setting. Chernobyl Diaries is set in the town of Pripyat, in the Ukraine. Back in the waning days of the Soviet Union, Pripyat was the location of the world’s most infamous nuclear plant disaster. Since then, the site has become famous as a ghost town, virtually untouched except by whatever nature chooses to visit upon it. The author of the film’s screenplay, Oren Peli, recalls his moment of inspiration for a horror story based in this notorious locale. “The idea came to me when I saw a photo blog posted by […]
