VOD Spotlight: Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock star in 9/11 tale “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close”

You wouldn’t think a movie that opens with an up-close image of a character falling to his death on 9/11 would run the risk of being too cutesy, right? But that is among the charges leveled at Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, director Stephen Daldry’s taxing but ultimately rewarding adaptation of the Jonathan Safran Foer novel. In the decade since the terrorist attacks on New York City, Extremely Loud is one of the few films that have tackled the subject head on, as opposed to keeping it in the periphery. It views the tragedy through the eyes of young Oskar […]

VOD Spotlight: Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara star in “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”

When the announcement came that Stieg Larsson’s thriller The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was getting the American remake treatment, like many, I winced. Too often, a domestic versioning ends up a dilution of the original, bloated with hyper-real action scenes and effects. But in the case of David Fincher’s telling, I’m happy to say that the strength of the material justifies the revisit. Critics worldwide agreed, and the film earned multiple award nominations and a won a total of seven various awards. Like its Swedish predecessor, the U.S. version tells the story of journalist and publisher Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel […]

Ashley Judd’s “Missing” adventures

By Jay Bobbin Mention to Ashley Judd that her latest character seems right in her wheelhouse, and she won’t disagree. After playing heroines-against-all-odds in such movies as Kiss the Girls, Double Jeopardy and High Crimes, the former Sisters regular is proud to say she’s doing her own stunts for her television return in the ABC action/drama series Missing, which premieres tonight at 8pm ET and airs Thursdays (the actress will be doing a live Twitter chat during tonight’s East Coast premiere from 8-9pm ET). Judd stars as Becca Winstone, whose son (Nick Eversman) vanishes 10 years after he saw his […]

HBO’s statement on the cancellation of “Luck”

Although its horse-racing drama series Luck had been renewed for a second season, HBO yesterday reversed course and canceled the series following the death of a third horse during production. Here is their statement on the decision: “It is with heartbreak that executive producers David Milch and Michael Mann together with HBO have decided to cease all future production on the series Luck. “Safety is always of paramount concern. We maintained the highest safety standards throughout production, higher in fact than any protocols existing in horseracing anywhere with many fewer incidents than occur in racing or than befall horses normally […]

“The Lying Game” star Alexandra Chando talks about the show’s “shocking” finale

By Stacey Harrison Last time I spoke with Alexandra Chando, she had no idea what was about to hit her. Her ABC Family drama, The Lying Game, was about to launch, and she wasn’t exactly sure how she might handle the onrush of sudden fame. Fans of shows on the teen-friendly network tend to be rather devoted. But, as with the mammoth acting job she took on in portraying long-lost twins Emma and Sutton — whose background and personalities present as much variety as any actor could want — she took it in stride. And as the series ends its first […]

Jon Hamm talks about the Season 5 return of “Mad Men”

By John Crook If you think Don Draper, the driven 1960s Manhattan ad executive at the center of Mad Men, is secretive to a fault, his real-life alter ego, Jon Hamm, knows how to play things pretty close to the vest himself. The actor chooses his words carefully when talking about the two-hour Season 5 premiere of the Emmy-winning AMC series debuting Sunday, March 25. Like his boss, series creator and executive producer Matthew Weiner, Hamm is close to phobic about giving up any spoilers for the new episodes. He won’t even divulge whether Don and Megan (Jessica Paré), the […]

U.S. vs. British TV: Jason Isaacs and Joanne Froggatt discuss

It’s a common discussion in my world. People get started discussing the quality of British television based on what they see on PBS, and pretty soon comparisons are being bandied about between Keeping Up With the Kardashians and Downton Abbey, trying to make the case for one being better than the other. (I’ll leave it up to you to determine which.) It’s true that PBS imports a lot of good stuff for us over here, and that by now most avid television viewers have at least some idea that quite a few of the more innovative shows we’ve enjoyed here […]

Jason Isaacs on his new NBC series, “Awake”

When I first saw the pilot for NBC’s Awake, starring Jason Isaacs, I had the familiar feeling of simultaneous excitement and apprehension that I think many television critics have when pre-screening shows before the new season. Excitement because the series looks really engaging and good; apprehension because it’s almost too good to last. It made me even more nervous when NBC kept waffling on the premiere date. Now that the premiere is just about here (next Thursday, March 1 at 10pm ET) and in fact, the pilot is already available to view (see above), we thought we should talk about […]

“Glee” episode tackles driving while texting and bullying

Every so often a television show proves it can make an impact on viewers that goes beyond entertainment, and last night’s Glee episode hopefully struck a chord with its younger fans that will ultimately save hundreds of lives. Far too often, the producers and writers of Glee come across as preachy, and whatever message they are trying to send gets lost in the ridiculous plots and lavish musical numbers. That was hardly the case last night. Instead of merely talking about the ramifications of subjects like driving while texting and bullying, we were taken there visually with lasting images that […]

VOD Spotlight: Leonardo DiCaprio embodies “J. Edgar”

The Internet is filled with side-by-side photos of J. Edgar Hoover and Leonardo DiCaprio, who plays Hoover in the film J. Edgar. There is a similarity in facial shape and features grouped close together, and DiCaprio nails the famous Hoover scowl. Yet, in portraying a person who could be termed the most enigmatic man in American history over a span of more than 50 years, DiCaprio had to tap into the nature of the controversial FBI director. “It was a terrific challenge to breathe life into this person, because he was such a mystery,” DiCaprio says. “I did find that […]
