“Degrassi” stars Melinda Shankar and Jahmil French welcome incoming class

It’s the show that seems to go on forever, a rite of passage series that’s been an education in itself for many going into and attending high school. Degrassi returns with the second half of Season 11 this Monday, Feb. 20, on TeenNick, and in preparation and celebration, its cast has been making the rounds, hosting premiere screening parties in select cities, meeting fans and talking to press people like me. I sat down with Melinda Shankar and Jahmil French, who play troubled Degrassi couple Alli Bhandari and Dave Turner, to talk about where they left things off at summer […]

“Glee” winter finale promo promises change

Glee has released a promo for its upcoming winter finale episode, airing Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 8pm ET, and in it, we are assured that, “Everything you know about Glee is about to change.”  I’ll say. In the promo we see a clip of a possible wedding for Rachel and Finn, along with Sue uttering the words, “I’m pregnant.” Hold on tight, Gleeks! Sounds like after this it might be a long wait until the series returns with its spring premiere on April 10.

Is Carol next to die? Season 2 of “The Walking Dead” promises to be crazier

Tensions are high when the second half of Season 2 of The Walking Dead returns on AMC Sunday, Feb. 12. After the barnyard shootout, Hershel, played by Scott Wilson (pictured with Andrew Lincoln), asks the survivors to get off his farmland. He then turns to the bottle and goes missing, requiring Rick (Lincoln) and Glen (Steven Yeun) to make a dangerous trip into town in search of him. The thought of leaving the farm, however, is greeted with mixed emotions from the survivors. MORE: Cast reactions to Sophia’s death “We’re just going to have to wait to see how successful […]

“Walking Dead” cast talks about season 2 midseason finale

With the second half of Season 2 of The Walking Dead finally making its return on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 9pm ET on AMC, the cast took some time to reflect on a cast member who won’t be returning. For the cast, as well as fans of the show, the midseason cliffhanger was simply heartbreaking when, after weeks of searching for Sophia (played by Madison Lintz), the survivors find her when she’s the last to stumble out of Hershel’s barn of walkers. Melissa McBride who plays Carol, Sophia’s mother, said: “Madison and I are both from Atlanta and I’ve known […]

VOD Spotlight: “The Rum Diary” is Johnny Depp’s salute to Hunter S. Thompson

There’s something gratifying about the friendship that developed between author and infamous gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson and Johnny Depp. Maybe it’s because it’s easy to imagine Thompson spewing abuse at a Hollywood icon of Depp’s stature. Or maybe it’s because it gives Depp’s fans the security that, yes, he really is kind of a weird guy in real life. Whatever it is, fans of Depp and Thompson should be grateful for The Rum Diary — both the book and the film. The Rum Diary was written in the early 1960s, before Thompson got caught up in the tumult of […]

BBC America gritty period drama “Copper” is in the works

I’ll be looking forward to this one. BBC America announced today the start of production on its first original drama series. Copper is “a gripping crime series set in 1860s New York City,” and stars Tom Weston-Jones (MI-5) as rough-hewn, coarse Irish-American detective Kevin Corcoran, who stalks the streets of the notoriously tough Five Points neighborhood. Audiences have had glimpses of historically troubled Five Points before, most notably in Martin Scorsese’s 2002 Gangs of New York. A seedy, filthy and run-down area where the desperate and the destitute eked out their livings — or tried not to die, as Gangs […]

This afternoon, FOX released an announcement from House executive producers David Shore, Katie Jacobs and Hugh Laurie, as well as a statement from Kevin Reilly, President of Entertainment at Fox Broadcasting, regarding the decision to end House this season, its eighth. Here are those statements: ANNOUNCEMENT FROM “HOUSE” EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS DAVID SHORE, KATIE JACOBS & HUGH LAURIE After much deliberation, the producers of House M.D. have decided that this season of the show, the 8th, should be the last. VOD Spotlight: Exploring the mystery of Shakespeare in “Anonymous”

Better known for destroying worlds with films such as Independence Day and 2012, director Roland Emmerich creates a historic one in the dramatic thriller Anonymous. The film supports the theory that someone else wrote Shakespeare’s plays — a debate among scholars of the Bard for years. Here, it’s postulated to be Edward De Vere, Earl of Oxford, (Rhys Ifans, pictured). A poet and playwright, he is among the most popular candidates to have authored Shakespeare’s works. In a seven-minute trailer for the film, Emmerich lays out 10 reasons why he believes that Shakespeare was a fraud. These are certainly compelling. But […]

Oren Peli talks “The River” and how long he hopes it will flow

If you’re not yet familiar with the name Oren Peli, just find yourself a scary movie fan. Even horror flick aficionados who thought they’d seen it all (I live with several) got the bejesus scared out of them by Paranormal Activity, the spare, terrifying 2009 mind-bender that the Israeli-born Peli shot in his own San Diego area home for around $15,000. The film grossed more than $107 million worldwide and has spawned three sequels, the latest of which — Paranormal Activity 4 — will hit theaters in October. Now Peli has paired up with Steven Spielberg to bring his unique […]
