Chasing Nashville recap: Small Town, Big Dreams

I’ll admit it right out of the gate. I’m worried that Lifetime’s new reality series, Chasing Nashville, might devolve into the “Singing Moms” version of Dance Moms — squabbling mothers living vicariously through their talented kids. But I hope I’m wrong, because I’m a sucker for younger buskers trying to make it big and because it took mere minutes for me to become attached to two of the show’s core cast members, Autumn Blair and Helena Hunt. Blair is a 17-year-old coal miner’s daughter from Chloe, W.Va., who dreams of making it big in country music so her dad can […]

Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition Season 2 episode 8 recap: Shootout at the AUDC corral

Another day, another counter on my screener, so let me just apologize for that right off the cuff, Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition fans. Also, let me thank all of you who engaged in such a spirited debate in the comments section of last week’s blog and for keeping it largely civil, since a large portion of the discussion was about a kid. A frequently obnoxious kid, to be sure. But a kid all the same. I think we can all accept she probably didn’t come out of the womb that way. And the editing room doesn’t help. But it’s also […]

Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition Season 2 Episode 7 recap: Wicked step, mother

This week on Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition, the theme is modern fairy tales. Goldilocks here says she’s got this bad boy wrapped up because she’s a princess from head to toe. Duh. Abby says fairy tales are magical. Tiffany says they’re crap, and it’s guaranteed to be the JoJo Show. Duh. Abby says the sole prince among the princesses is going to have to work extra hard for his fairy tale ending after the stunt he pulled last week. You know, the one where he tried to remain loyal to his twin brother and Abby was all Off With His […]

Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition recap: Broadway, babies

This week on Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition, Cindy is sick of Shari saying “McKaylee,” the theme is Broadway and Rachelle has forgotten her pants. This can only mean one thing — this is Sas we’re dealing with right here, boys and girls. Star of the Broadway stage. Where pants are optional. With a dashing wiggle of her baby brows, JoJo informs us she should already be on Broadway because she is good at singing, dancing and speaking well. Also, wiggling her eyebrows. This week’s skill is versatility and the challenge winner scores the first solo of the season. Rachelle will […]

Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition recap: Hop On Prop

Welcome back, Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition fans. Have we all recovered from last week’s ousting of Kalani? Not Abby. She tells the remaining dancers that this week, we aren’t going to spotlight a particular skill because the theme is all about being unconventional. Then she summons Kalani and Kira from backstage and Abby bestows upon her weeping favorite the precious call-back card. Take THAT, doubting Manno and Richy! Even though Abby herself admits that she never thought she’d use it. She says Kalani didn’t blow it, Richy and Rak did, and she couldn’t live with that. Melanie says Kalani has […]

Interview with MasterChef Junior judge Graham Elliot on working with kids

Interview with MasterChef Junior judge Graham Elliot. Twenty-four kids ages 8 to 13 demonstrate their culinary smarts and passion for food in the “junior” version of FOX’s successful foodie series MasterChef — in MasterChef Junior airing Fridays at 8pm ET/PT on FOX. Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich and Graham Elliot serve as judges in a format that is quite similar to what fans are familiar with. “It’s the exact same format — the same judges and really the same tone,” Elliot tells us. “We wanted to make sure we didn’t dumb it down. The only big difference is when they leave […]

Boomerang bringing back classic “Looney Tunes” shorts in October

I’ll admit I wasn’t a huge fan of Cartoon Network’s The Looney Tunes Show, an attempt to bring back the classic Warner Bros. animated characters in a modern format. While it was fun seeing the old gang like Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck, I found the show too formulaically sitcomish, and not nearly “looney” enough — certainly not up to the standards of inspired comic insanity set by the original Looney Tunes short films. Those short films will be making a return to the Cartoon Network family, on its sister network Boomerang. Beginning Oct. 5, Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, […]

Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition recap: What happens with Vegas

With nine dancers remaining to battle for the Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition crown, Abby announces that this week’s theme is Las Vegas and the skill is flexibility. Kalani says she’s super-duper flexible, so this should be a cakewalk. Er, dangle. Whatever. Abby reminds everyone that when she says flexibility, she means flexibility not only of the body, but of the mind. Then Shannon Beach, who has toured with Katy Perry and Justin Bieber and says that every one of the dancers is capable of having a career like hers, appears to school the dancers in the silks. Speaking of rock […]

Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition recap Season 2 Episode 3: Gods and Mortals and Monsters

As we begin episode 3 of Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition, we get a look at two very different moms — Angela, who says that Richy saving Chloe from elimination last week was really God tapping her girl on the shoulder, and Melanie, who, with a gleam in her eye, says that there are a lot of moms there who don’t want her daughter Haley to succeed. I think they mostly don’t want Melanie the Mouth to succeed, but I guess they’re a package deal. Then Abby shows up to inform the rank and file that the theme this week is […]
