A Project Runway Field Trip!

by WindUpDoll Project Runway always starts with the longest episode recaps ever. It’s great to get your bearings and make sure you’ve got a glass of water or a beer, but it sure is a lot of screen time for something we’ve already seen. We’ve only got one hour people, give me something new. Sweet P is missing Kit, and others in the apartment keep calling her Kit, which doesn’t help. Ricky is feeling inadequate, but he doesn’t cry. We fly through the model selection, thankfully. Heidi once again ducks actually telling contestants what they’re doing and leaves that to […]

American Idol — When All Else Fails, Show A Baby

by WindUpDoll We’re in Charleston, South Carolina for this episode of American Idol. I’ve never been to Charleston, but I’ve been up in Greenville and it was quite lovely, even the hot boiled peanuts. Or as they say, ha ball peaaanuts… They’re best when procured from a gentleman on the side of a mountain road with a big boiling pot in a little trailer. Sublime. We’ve got the stadium fill-in montage with partying contestants, and people claiming to have traveled thousands of miles to audition. For some reason, Idol likes to feature folks who are lacking in geographic skills. Why […]

American Idol Invades San Diego

by WindUpDoll My cat attempted to write this recap, but she couldn’t get past the first letter, so I’m taking over. By the way, I want to start off this week saying that I’m NOT reading any of the supposed spoilers and stories about folks with recording contracts past. That’s not the kind of stuff I care about. If The Smoking Gun gets their hands on a mugshot, I’m so there. But if y’all think there’s something interesting, comment here. I’m all ears.

American Idol: The Madness Continues

by WindUpDoll We’re in Texas and it’s hot. One potential contestant goes into labor waiting to audition. Do I need to tell you that she names the baby Idol? You can see this stuff a mile away. First up, Jennifer, a former methhead who’s now a sober & happy mom. Unfortunately she likes singing “Jesus Take the Wheel.” In times like that, Jesus tells me to grab the steering wheel & remember the driver’s ed instructor he sent me when I was a teenager. Thankfully she’ll be singing The Pretenders for her audition. Good choice, and she does it well. […]

Project Runway: On Garde! Recap

by WindUpDoll Ooh! Group project! But first, we need to bitch about the last challenge. Of course, Christian is bitching about his client. Model selection is a little different — they all come out with wacky hair and the designers have to use their wacky hair as inspiration for their garment. Oh, and of course Ricky is the last person to select a model again, getting him all misty. I don’t think he has a full-on cry though, so it doesn’t count in the Ricky Cry Count. These garments are meant to be avant garde and therefore challenging, so they’ve […]

American Idol: The Productivity-Sucking Begins

by WindUpDoll Last week, Simon Cowell told a group of TCA reporters that he’s sure talent has slipped through the American Idol cracks. However, none of those talents have made it big. Well, tonight begins the festival of thousands that will, inevitably, slip through the cracks. Talent or no. We’re starting off with the required shots of folks in the crowds — some talented, some delusional. This, is American Idol. And so begins the opening “theme” music that has such a Pavlovian effect on me. It makes me want to sit on my butt and eat Cheetos. I can’t eat […]

“Ghost Hunters” Take On The World

SCI FI Channel‘s Ghost Hunters International debuted Wednesday night as the network’s No. 1 reality telecast in its history, and bested its broadcast time slot competition, including the dreadful, and dreadfully popular, Gossip Girl. The episode found a new team of Ghost Hunters — lead investigators Robb Demarest and Andy Andrews; Brian Harnois, Donna La Croix, Barry Fitzgerald (whom you may recall from the original Ghost Hunters’ frightening exploration of some Irish ruins) and newcomer Shannon Sylvia — traveling to England’s Chillingham Castle and Scotland’s Mary King’s Close to see what kind of spirits Europe can throw at us. As […]

OMG! I Think Project Runway Just Asked Me To The Prom! Squeal!

Again, the models of Project Runway have the week off. How crappy it must be to get ‘eliminated’ for a week when you didn’t actually do anything. Heidi does her usual “Good morning, designers” spiel and instead of the usual models coming onto the runway, a group of gawky teenagers in uniforms come trudging out. Heidi explains that the designers will be working with these teenagers to create their prom dresses. Christian is justifiably horrified at the idea. The other twist for this week is that the girls have gone through the designers’ portfolios and have selected who they will […]

Do You Like “Gladiator” Shows?

Well, if ya do, you’re not the only one! NBC’s revived American Gladiators premiered Sunday with this season’s highest adult 18-49 rating for any new series premiere, and was the Peacock’s top new series debut since Heroes back in 2006, and led the network to its highest non-sports rating during the Sunday 9-11pm ET time period in three years. “We’re extremely excited by the response to American Gladiators,” said John Wallace, president of NBC Local Media Division, in perhaps an understatement. The reason the Local Media president is now excited about the show too is that NBC plans to pummel […]

Project Runway — Making S*** Out Of Candy

Finally! Project Runway has emerged from the depths of their Christmas break. Not that the designers actually TOOK a break during filming, but we can live with the delusion that Project Runway designers aren’t completely sleep deprived. We already know, due to the incessant repetition of the preview for this night’s episode, that it’s the ‘make something fabulous out of crap’ episode. I love this episode — it’s crafty, it’s creative and has the potential for pretty big meltdowns. We begin this episode ordinarily enough — designers starting their day. Kevin’s all alone in his Gotham apartment, since all of […]
