Duck Dynasty recap: “So You Think You Can Date”

The sign of a strong series is when you know it has a deep bench of supporting characters. The best example is The Simpsons, which has hundreds of characters most fans — even casual ones — know by name. And at any time the writers could choose to build an entire episode around any one of them. I mean, I would totally watch a Duff Man episode, wouldn’t you? Depth has never been a problem for Duck Dynasty, with the members of the Robertson family alone accounting for more possible storylines than any reality series has a right to. But […]

Preview: “Ghost Shark” on Syfy

For Syfy, this summer has been the Summer of Sharknado, with that particular original movie doing bang-up social media business, if not chewing up the ratings right away. There have since been a few re-airs of Sharknado that have picked up viewership, and a third re-air will take place this Thursday, Aug. 22, just ahead of the premiere of the network’s latest shark-themed original movie — Ghost Shark. As with Sharknado, Ghost Shark is about exactly what its self-explanatory title says it is about. The monstrous antagonist is, indeed, a ghost, and a shark. Specifically, it’s the ghost of a […]

Modern Dads: A&E series showcases the life of stay-at-home fathers

Normally when I put in a screener for a new series, my attitude is somewhere between unbridled enthusiasm (your Sons of Anarchy, Longmire) to weary skepticism (anything CW). But with Modern Dads, it bordered on outright fear. We all have our sensitive spots when it comes to seeing aspects of ourselves and our backgrounds portrayed on TV. Mine happens to include people from small towns and fathers. With so much of reality TV revolving around rural folk, you might think that the whole genre would be one big land mine. But whether it’s the over-the-top outrageousness of Honey Boo Boo […]
