“Breaking Bad” Season 5.1 recap: Gliding Over … and out

Mike is gone. It seemed inevitable given the collision course he and Walter White were on from Episode 1 of Breaking Bad’s fifth season. It sucks because Jonathan Banks played Mike, the fixer’s fixer, with such brilliant rough-concrete surety as to be the compass of the ad hoc crime syndicate White (Bryan Cranston) presumed to create after assassinating their meth-kingpin boss, Gus, with jaw-dropping horror at Season 4’s end. Yet it is par for Breaking Bad because creator Vince Gilligan has a similar surety when it comes to finding those nerve-nexuses in narrative tension and seemingly following his characters’ natural […]

“Breaking Bad” Season 5 premiere recap

A scruffy, stolid, bespectacled guy gabs absently with a chatty Denny’s waitress. He makes the number 52 with the bacon on his plate. It is his birthday, he says, which she says rates him a free meal. He meets a guy in the bathroom, exchanges money for a car-key, leaves a hundred for his free birthday breakfast and exits to appraise the trunk full of the heavy machine gun and cache of ammunition he just purchased. Thus begins the long-anticipated Season 5 of AMC’s Breaking Bad, creator Vince Gilligan telling us again subtly what he has been telling us for […]

We asked him a few questions about the impending season, which premieres March 8 on AMC. Where does Season 2 pick up? Aaron Paul: In the final climax of Season 1, [Walter and Jesse are] making the biggest deal we’ve made, to the crazy drug dealer — this lunatic — Tuco. We’re, first of all, just […]

‘Breaking Bad’: AMC’s New Series Is Bad — And It’s Brilliant

I’m sitting on a low brick wall in the backyard of a cozy ranch home on the outskirts of Albuquerque, fragrant sage and rosemary bushes scratching at my back as a dozen men and women dressed for outdoor comfort alternately run over and step on my toes. And I couldn’t be happier. That is, until I realize that the equally tickled guy beside me, snapping photo after photo of the action, is none other than Vince Gilligan, creative mastermind behind The X Files — and the exquisitely original dramedy being filmed before our eyes. Seated at a patio table a […]
