Jon Stewart leaving “The Daily Show”

Jon Stewart stunned his fans, and media watchers in general, last night when he announced to his studio audience for that night’s taping of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show that he will be leaving as host. Stewart has hosted The Daily Show since 1999, when he replaced Craig Kilborn. He will be leaving later this year (plans are still being worked out exactly when, according to Stewart’s announcement. Stewart also indicated he has no immediate plans). Stewart’s departure comes in the wake of Comedy Central also saying goodbye recently to Stephen Colbert, who first became widely known on The Daily Show before spinning off into his […]

Key & Peele deliver Pro Edition of East/West Bowl

Ahead of their Super Bowl special airing Jan. 30 at 10pm ET/PT on Comedy Central, Key and Peele have released a Pro Edition of their popular East/West Bowl sketch, which traditionally has fun at the expense of the unusual names among some college football players. This time, Key and Peele portray a variety of fictional pro players with hilarious names, mannerisms and ways of speaking. Here, though, there are even a couple of real-life NFLers thrown into the mix, whose names were apparently too good to leave out, including Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, D’Brickashaw Ferguson and Aaron Rodgers (?). (Rodgers introduces […]

Justin Bieber to be “roastee” in next Comedy Central roast

As if he hasn’t been mocked enough lately following his new Calvin Klein underwear ads (most notably spoofed last week by Saturday Night Live), pop star Justin Bieber will be the “roastee” in the next Comedy Central Roast, the network announced today. “Justin has been asking us for a few years to roast him, and we just kept telling him to go create more source material first. We’re thrilled he listened,” said Kent Alterman, President, Content Development & Original Programming, Comedy Central. The Comedy Central Roast of Justin Bieber will tape in Los Angeles. Comedy Central says that the tape and airdate will be […]

TCA: Larry Wilmore on his upcoming The Nightly Show

Daily Show vet Larry Wilmore took to the stage at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour yesterday to talk about his new gig hosting The Nightly Show, which takes overs The Colbert Report’s 11:30 p.m. time slot on Comedy Central beginning Jan. 19. “It’s kind of a hybrid, if you will, of, let’s say, The Daily Show and maybe Politically Incorrect,” Wilmore said, adding that the show was the brainchild of Daily’s Jon Stewart, who produces. “The first part of the show is the scripted part where I’m weighing in, giving my take on the events or event of the day that we’re going to be talking […]

Stephen Colbert gets an “immortal” sendoff

The rumors about the death of “Stephen Colbert” turned out to be greatly exaggerated. Leading up to last night’s final episode of The Colbert Report, some were speculating that Colbert may take the opportunity to “kill” off the right-wing pundit persona he had successfully portrayed on the show for nine years. This made sense especially when it was announced that “Grimmy” (The Grim Reaper, a show regular) would appear as the only “guest” on the finale. It also made sense in that, once that “Stephen Colbert” was gone, the real Colbert could proceed with his real personality (which did creep […]

“The Colbert Report” announces guests for final week

After tonight, there will only be four more episodes of Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report left, as the series will end on Dec. 18 after a nine-year run. Stephen Colbert will be taking over CBS’ Late Show for the retiring David Letterman later next year. Today, Comedy Central announced who the guests will be for the final week of The Colbert Report. In a release, Colbert, modest as ever in his faux right-wing pundit persona, said, “Our last week of shows are going to be really special, just like every other week.” The Colbert Report Guests — Final Week, Dec. […]

Tosh.0 gets “family-friendly” tonight

For the first time in its six-season history, Comedy Central’s hit series Tosh.0 will air a “family-friendly” edition. Being a program that showcases the wildest viral videos from the Internet, Tosh.0 regularly includes clips that certainly are not suitable for younger viewers. Tonight, Oct. 7, however, the program promises a show “completely devoid of puking, bodily injuries, strong language with little or no sexual dialogue or situations.” While that may be a buzzkill for some, it will allow the more sensitive and younger viewers to tune in for once (but don’t get used to it). “Comedy isn’t about being clean […]

South Park Season 18 premiere takes on Washington Redskins name

South Park Season 18 begins this Wednesday at 10pm ET/PT on Comedy Central. Never a show to shy away from controversial topics, the series delves immediately into the hot-button issue of the name of the NFL’s Washington Redskins team. That name is recognized by many, inside and outside of the Native American community, as an offensive racial slur, while others — including team owner Dan Snyder — claim otherwise and view it as a historical term of respect. A preview clip from the South Park Season 18 premiere (called “Go Fund Yourself”) was released yesterday online (and, apparently, on air […]
