Discovery Channel’s “Dinosaur Revolution” is a blast from the prehistoric past

By Jeff Pfeiffer Follow @ChannelGuideJP Notable dinosaur illustrators and animators have gotten together for the intriguing new Discovery Channel series Dinosaur Revolution that, in the previews I saw, managed to recall for me the best dino-thrills and emotions that I also found in everything from the Walking With Dinosaurs series to the The Land Before Time films and the “Rite of Spring” dinosaur sequence in Disney’s Fantasia. Almost narration-free, the series presents CG-animated vignettes depicting life for various dinosaurs, using the latest theories of how we believe these animals behaved.

Discovery Channel’s “Carfellas” sell used cars the tough-guy way

by Karl J. Paloucek Follow @ChannelGuide Once upon a time, tough guys joined the Marines or got hired as muscle by the mob, and were reputed to be very protective of their mothers. These days, tough guys get reality shows. Whether they’re deep-sea fishermen, ice-road truck drivers, pawn-shop owners, loggers or the guys who park your cars, they’re all over the place on TV. And three more just joined the bunch. Discovery Channel‘s Carfellas centers on Mike DeLucia, a reformed convict who, with his crew, Tommie and Mario, runs Mikey D’s used car dealership in Amityville, Long Island. Of course, […]

TV specials mark the 10th anniversary of 9/11

Ten years after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, our country remains scarred, physically and psychically, as we continue to deal with the swirling negative feelings of anger, vengeance, fear and, in some cases, prejudice, that have lasted since that fateful day. But over the past decade, other feelings have begun to rise as steadily as the memorials to the victims — feelings of patriotism, reflection, remembrance, regained confidence and hope that we can start to move forward. All of these emotions, and probably many more, in varying degrees, will be found in abundance over the next few weeks […]

Shark Week 2011 ready to surface

By  Jeff Pfeiffer Follow @ChannelGuideJP In preparation for our feature on Discovery Channel’s annual summer event favorite Shark Week — airing July 31-Aug. 6 and now in its 24th year — we tried to connect with “Chief Shark Officer” (CSO) Andy Samberg (Saturday Night Live), who will be hosting the programming stunt as well as starring in a special of his own. Most “CSOs” would jump at the opportunity to promote their “products” (in this case, Discovery Channel and sharks), but Samberg simply wasn’t available for an interview (don’t worry, Andy, we weren’t going to ask hard-hitting questions about the […]

Discovery Channel and Georgia Aquarium provide Shark Cam during Shark Week

By Jeff Pfeiffer Follow @ChannelGuideJP Starting today, Discovery Channel and Georgia Aquarium are once again teaming to provide a live, “fish-eye” view of a variety of sharks living in the world’s largest indoor aquatic habitat, Ocean Voyager. Shark Cam can be found at Discovery’s Shark Week website. You can also check it out here after the jump; it’s kind of relaxing. The high-definition, underwater camera located inside Georgia Aquarium’s shark-filled habitat offers an immersive, 360-degree panoramic live-streaming experience, complete with abilities for social conversation with other viewers and shark experts.

Today in network swag: Discovery’s Shark Week

By Jeff Pfeiffer Follow @ChannelGuideJP I have to admit, one of the perks that I enjoy most when it comes to writing about television — aside from seeing advance screeners and talking to sometimes-notable people — is much of the swag that networks will occasionally send to promote a show. This past week I got some pretty cool items from Discovery Channel to hype their upcoming annual event, Shark Week.

Discovery special explores SEAL Team Six

By Jeff Pfeiffer Follow @ChannelGuideJP It’s a good thing that Disney decided not to pursue a trademark of the term, “SEAL Team Six,” otherwise we may not have gotten to see the upcoming Discovery Channel special Secrets of SEAL Team Six, premiering July 10 at 9pm ET/PT. Although the now-famous Special Ops unit officially doesn’t even exist, it suddenly became America’s worst-kept classified secret since Area 51 this past May when the team made international headlines by taking down Osama bin Laden. But that was just the latest mission for this highly elite group that has been active for three […]

Discovery seeks a “One Man Army”

By Jeff Pfeiffer We’ve had many readers mourn the discontinuation of Military Channel’s Special Ops Mission series. While there are as yet no plans to bring that series back, fans of that show may enjoy the upcoming series One Man Army, airing on Military Channel’s parent network, Discovery Channel. Premiering July 13 at 10pm ET/PT, One Man Army pits elite military, extreme sports and law enforcement operatives against one another in various events that are way beyond what your average Joe goes through on something like Wipeout. In each episode, host Mykel Hawke, himself a U.S. Army Special Forces veteran […]

Osama bin Laden’s DVR foreshadows his death

By Tom Comi After 10 years of searching for al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden by various agencies, many Americans had probably given up hope that he would ever be captured. But a lot can be determined by looking at a person’s TV-viewing habits, and the recently discovered DVR found at bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan suggests he knew the end was near. Channel Guide Magazine was able to obtain the DVR through top-secret sources*, and it turns out that the world’s most wanted man was quite the fan of American television. Here are some of the shows that he had […]

Japanese disaster is subject of upcoming cable documentaries

With the images of the devastation from the 9.0 magnitude earthquake and resulting tsunami that hit northeast Japan last month fresh in our minds — and with a new nuclear nightmare from destroyed reactors seemingly getting worse by the day — two cable networks are presenting documentaries in coming weeks to explore this historic catastrophe. First off is National Geographic Channel‘s Witness: Disaster in Japan, premiering tonight at 10pm ET/PT. Coming from the producers of the acclaimed special Witness Katrina, this film takes a similar, firsthand look at this current tragedy entirely through the eyes of those who experienced it. […]
