“Sons of Anarchy” recap: “To Thine Own Self”

After sitting out last week’s episode, Nero is back in something fierce this week. On what is supposed to a happy occasion — the opening of his high-class escort/porn operation with the Sons — he finds his old crew paying him a visit. And it’s not to congratulate him on a new venture. They don’t like the idea of their old compadre moving on to bigger and better things, and they want a little taste, in the form of some guns to help defend themselves in their neverending turf wars. Nero is dead-set against it, but Jax talks him into […]

“Sons of Anarchy” recap: “Crucifixed”

It’s getting that time of the season when the “previously on Sons of Anarchy” segment is taking up a noticeably large amount of time. With all the shenanigans going down, there’s a lot of ‘splaining to do, especially when you have a super-sized 90-minute episode that picks up so many threads from stories that stretch back for seasons. That said, “Crucifixed” is one of the more brutal stretches the show has ever put us through. Oftentimes I won’t remember a given episode by title, but with “Crucifixed,” I’ll never forget it. You’ll know why by the end. We pick up […]

“Sons of Anarchy” recap: Andare Pescare

I wasn’t cool enough to know the exact translation of tonight’s Sons of Anarchy episode (being a monolingual ‘Merican and all), but I did know enough to figure out that it had something to do with fish. “Sleep with the fishes” would’ve been appropriate, especially given the heavy mob connection that follows, but it turns out it’s closer to “gone fishing.” That said, there are no literal fish to speak of, just a lot of metaphorical fishing as Jax moves in on getting the proof he needs that Clay is the mastermind behind the renegade Nomads. The hunt for Frankie […]

“Sons of Anarchy” recap: “Ablation”

I love it when TV teaches me something new. You know, like the title of tonight’s Sons of Anarchy. I wasn’t exactly sure what “ablation” meant, but it doesn’t sound real positive, does it? Turns out it essentially means the removal of something harmful to the body via surgery. Hmm, yeah, this could get ugly. So, just to get it out of the way, the kids are OK. Poor Abel has to undergo a bit of surgery but hey, after what that kid’s been through already, he shouldn’t be too worse for wear. But the real suspense is with Gemma. […]

“7 Questions” With … Winter Ave Zoli of “Sons of Anarchy”

Winter Ave Zoli has managed to parlay what was originally a quickie guest spot into a full-fledged recurring role on the smash FX biker drama Sons of Anarchy. Her character Lyla’s tragic romance with Opie ended this season, but Lyla remains a part of the SAMCRO family, turning up for some quality screen time in tonight’s episode. Zoli, who can also currently be seen costarring with Kenneth Branagh in the short film “Prodigal,” part of the Stars in Shorts feature film, took some time to answer our “7 Questions.” You’re at a magazine rack and can only pick three titles. […]

“Sons of Anarchy” recap: “Toad’s Wild Ride”

Those music montages toward the end of episodes are never a good sign, are they? Yeah, when I noticed there was about 10 minutes left and the unmistakable first notes of Iggy Pop and The Stooges’ “The Passenger” came on, I knew that “Toad’s Wild Ride” had yet to deliver its biggest jolt. But more on that later. Clay is in full damage-control mode with his Nomad flunkies, telling them there is DNA evidence that will link them to the home invasions and the murder of Roosevelt’s wife. Frankie (Chuck Zito, who you just knew was going to be a […]

“Sons of Anarchy” recap: “Small World”

Clay, you dirty bastard. Been awhile since I’ve been able to say that. Feels kinda good, in a weird way that only Sons of Anarchy can produce. Yes, tonight we saw that Clay indeed has been playing possum, using that oxygen tube in his nose to great effect, making everyone think the old wolf had turned into a harmless cub. But he may be hatching his most horrible plan yet. More on that later. After last week’s relatively lighthearted jaunt, we’re back in the dumps right away as Sheriff Roosevelt is in the hospital attending to his injured wife. Now, […]

Winter Ave Zoli talks life after Opie on “Sons of Anarchy”

(Note: Do not read if you haven’t been watching this season of Sons of Anarchy and don’t wish to know some pivotal information regarding the death of a major character.) As sometimes happens in Hollywood, back in March Winter Ave Zoli randomly ran into her Sons of Anarchy costar Ryan Hurst at an audition for a different project. Zoli was happy to see the actor who has played her husband for the past four seasons on FX’s hard-hitting biker drama — someone she considers to be a friend — but when she heard the shocking news he had regarding his […]

“Sons of Anarchy” recap: “Orca Shrugged”

As usual, lots of juicy stuff happened in tonight’s Sons of Anarchy, but let’s jump right to the heart of it, shall we? WALTON GOGGINS AS A TRANSGENDERED HOOKER!!! (That oughtta help the old search-engine optimization, right? Pardon me if I repeat that phrase a few times going forward.) So yes, the Justified star — that would be Walton Goggins, playing a transgendered hooker — shows up about halfway through the episode as part of SAMCRO’s blackmail scheme aimed at a local politician. A morbidly obese, diabetic local politician who passes out after eating a cupcake surreptitiously brought to him […]

“Sons of Anarchy” recap: “Stolen Huffy”

Some Sons of Anarchy episodes are meant to shock you, others make you want to pump your fist in excitement, or throw stuff at the screen in bloodlust. But there are some that flat out make you want to cry. “Stolen Huffy” is unapologetically a tear-jerker, even if it saves it for the end. Opie is dead, but Ryan Hurst gets to make one last appearance (until the inevitable flashback, I suppose) as the big guy’s corpse, which finally looks at peace. Jax says a mouthful when he opines that Opie seemed to be looking for a way out ever […]
