The CW embarks on a quest for the Holy Grail with “Labyrinth”

No Monty Python jokes here. The CW’s new miniseries Labyrinth, airing Thursday, May 22, and Friday, May 23, at 8pm ET/PT, is a seriously engrossing adventure. The CW kicks off summer with Labyrinth, a two-night, four-hour miniseries based on The New York Times best-selling author Kate Mosse’s novel of the same name. Jumping back and forth between medieval and modern-day France, the story revolves around two young women divided by centuries but united in their hunt for the Holy Grail. In 13th-century France on the eve of war, 17-year-old Alaïs (Jessica Brown Findlay, Downton Abbey) must protect a book written […]

Our audience is broader and more inclusive than it has ever been, and we are growing on-air and on all digital platforms,” said Mark Pedowitz, President, The CW. “We just finished our most-watched season in three years, and our schedule is as strong as it has ever been, with more vibrant and more diverse programming. “The 100” brings futuristic take on “Lord of the Flies” to The CW

If you notice some similarities between the classic novel Lord of the Flies and The CW’s futuristic new drama The 100, that’s no accident. Like William Golding’s chilling masterpiece, the sci-fi series follows a group of young people left alone in a dangerous wilderness, and observes the deadly developments that take place as they struggle to not only survive the elements but each other. In The 100 (pronounced “The Hundred” if you want to sound cool about it) Earth has been left uninhabitable by nuclear war, with the remnants of humanity waiting out the century or so needed for the […]

Critics Choice Awards 2014: Time, date, TV channel, preview and more

Another awards show, so soon after the Golden Globes? That’s the task that awaits the Critics Choice Awards 2014 — the 19th Annual Critics Choice Movie Awards — which will be broadcast live tonight beginning at 8pm ET/PT on The CW. Depending on your local market, you can find pre-show coverage beginning as early as two hours before the ceremony. Aisha Tyler (Archer) will host the event, which has grown in stature over the years as a pretty good indicator of what we can expect from the Academy Awards. The biggest nomination-getters were 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle […]

Adelaide Kane says The CW’s era-mixing “Reign” is a “beautiful mishmash” of historical fashion

You probably know you’re watching The CW when you see a historical drama based on Mary Stuart (Mary, Queen of Scots) and the screen is filled with impossibly beautiful young people wearing clothes not quite of the era, including stiletto heels. And to drive home the fact that a bit of creative license was taken with The CW’s new series Reign, star Adelaide Kane (Teen Wolf), who plays Mary, confirmed for me in an interview this summer at the Television Critics Association Press Tour that, “This isn’t the History Channel. … It’s a TV show. It’s supposed to be fun! […]

“The Originals” takes “Vampire Diaries” to New Orleans

It’s about time all these ancient vampires started acting their age. The CW’s latest fang fest takes characters introduced in the decidedly youth-friendly Vampire Diaries universe and lets them take a more “bacchanalian” approach to immortality, as executive producer Julie Plec puts it. “We graduated high school [with The Vampire Diaries] and went to college and are getting our little master’s degree in The Originals,” she says. Klaus (Joseph Morgan), Elijah (Daniel Gillies) and Rebekah (Claire Holt) make the journey from Mystic Falls to New Orleans, where vampires, werewolves and witches are locked in a deadly struggle for control. Marcel […]

TCA: CW wants to expand upon DC universe, may spin off Flash series from “Arrow”

At The CW executive panel this morning, network president Mark Pedowitz addressed the Television Critics Association (TCA) Summer 2013 Press Tour gathering. Among the things he talked about was how the upcoming season of The CW’s hit series Arrow will feature an origin story for Barry Allen — better known to comic book fans as The Flash. If this storyline goes well with viewers, Pedowitz suggested there may be a Flash spinoff series. “We plan to introduce a reoccurring character and an origin story of Dr. Barry Allen, who you now know is The Flash,” said Pedowitz. “… [W]e’re planning […]

“Sex and the City” fandom not required to enjoy “The Carrie Diaries”

As a straight man, I wasn’t necessarily in the primary demo that seemed to be most drawn to HBO’s famed 1998-2004 series Sex and the City, which was inspired by the writings of Candace Bushnell and followed the romantic adventures of Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her gal pals in the Big Apple. I tuned in enough to be able to appreciate the writing and acting, but I didn’t fully connect with or relate to, I suppose, the women, or their glamorous Manhattan backdrop. So when I first heard that The CW was creating a series out of The Carrie Diaries — based on […]

Cycle 20 of “America’s Next Top Model” will include male models

The CW announced today that it has ordered a 20th cycle of its hit reality series America’s Next Top Model. As part of the network’s ongoing strategy to increase its amount of summer programming, it says that Cycle 20 of ANTM will debut in Summer 2013 (no premiere date yet). In even bigger news, for the first time, male models will be added to the group of contestants competing for the title of America’s Next Top Model. The men will move into the models’ house alongside the women. The CW also says that in Cycle 20, viewers will continue to […]

5 schoolyard games that need to be reality TV shows

Maybe (but probably not) you saw the new competition series Oh Sit! on The CW last night, an extreme version of musical chairs. Seriously. We’re not making this up. It was on TV and everything. There’s video evidence above. But here are five new reality TV schoolyard games we did make up: Duck Duck Goose of Doom Experts in various disciplines of mixed martial arts sit in a circle, with the picker challenging the goose to chase him in a Ninja Warrior-style course, followed by a cage-fighting match. Tube Top Tetherball Tetherball got a bounce in popularity from Napoleon Dynamite, […]
