“America’s Next Top Model” Cycle 19: College Edition gives viewers a vote

The latest edition of America’s Next Top Model is looking to shake things up. After the shocking April announcement that long-time mentor Jay Manuel, judge Nigel Barker and runway coach J. Alexander would not be returning, ANTM Cycle 19 returns with an all-new crew for its first-ever “College Edition” on Friday, Aug. 24, at 8pm on The CW. Host Tyra Banks leads the panel of judges, alongside fashion public relations maven Kelly Cutrone and former boxer and international male supermodel Rob Evans. In a new twist this season, the audience will serve as the fourth judge. Viewers will be able […]

Comic-Con 2012: “Cult” review

Continuing The CW’s descent into darkness that began with the surprisingly lurid Arrow, Cult is a meta-upon-meta scare series that tries to blur the line between what’s real and what’s paranoid fantasy. A small but devoted fan base is obsessed, to put it lightly, with the series Cult, which airs on The CW (!). It’s about a messianic figure named Billy Grimm (Robert Knepper) whose followers obey him with a Manson-esque furor. But there’s one former follower, Kelly (Alona Tal), who is now with law enforcement and is trying to save some of her family members still in Billly’s grasp, […]

Comic-Con 2012: “Arrow” review

We’re not in Smallville anymore, that’s for sure. With Arrow, the upcoming small-screen interpretation of the DC Comics character Green Arrow, The CW is taking a page out of the Christopher Nolan playbook, forsaking any BAM! POW! ZAP! moments and going dark. Very dark. Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) is a vacuous, materialistic playboy who is heir to his family’s Queen Industries empire. He’s such a jerk, in fact, that he decides to take his girlfriend’s sister on a boat ride with him, and not just so he can show her the stateroom. But a storm at sea wrecks the ship, […]

Documentary special looks at the history and evolution of the Batmobile

The CW will be airing the broadcast network premiere of a new half-hour special about the history and evolution of Batman’s iconic ride — the Batmobile — on July 16 (the special makes its world premiere July 12 at Comic-Con in San Diego, where all six of the Batmobiles from film and TV will also appear for the first time together). The special is simply, and appropriately, called The Batmobile, and uses archival footage, images and illustrations of the Batmobile to document its birth and evolution to the present day. Interviews with filmmakers, key designers, builders, stunt drivers, actors and […]

McBride, Bieber, Gaga, Poinsettia Bowl and “The X-Factor” highlight great night of entertainment

It might seem a little sacrilegious during the holidays to refer to a piece of technology as a savior, but the DVR can certainly be your best friend with so many great specials, movies and sporting events airing this time of year. Our favorite dramas and sitcoms take a well-deserved break to make room for more seasonal fare, and tonight is a great example of the entertainment cup running over. So set that DVR to make sure you don’t miss out on any of the fun this evening.

Epilogue: Why “H8R” Gets It Wrong

by Karl J. Paloucek Follow @ChannelGuide Like everyone else on our editorial staff, I was asked to submit something about a celebrity whom I hate as part of our comment on the premiere of The CW’s H8R, featuring the ever-ubiquitous Mario Lopez. I’d like to say that I’m so virtuous that I just couldn’t muster anybody that I hated. To some extent, that’s true — I tend to think that life’s a bit too short to throw hate at people I don’t even know. (I barely have enough time to hate so many of the people I do know …) […]

“Channel Guide” staff plays the office version of “H8R”

By Stacey Harrison Follow @ChannelGuideSRH Deep down everybody wants to be loved, right? Even people who go out of their way to gain notoriety for being shallow, obnoxious, confrontational jerks who don’t think life is worth living unless it’s in front of the camera. The CW attempts to heal this raw societal wound with H8R, which premieres tonight at 8pm. The Mario Lopez-hosted show pairs one tragically misunderstood celebrity with an ordinary person who openly despises them. Some of the H8-ees include Snooki from Jersey Shore, Kim Kardashian (Note: the “H8R” in her episode is NOT new hubby Kris Humphries), […]

New fall TV series are likely to be canceled

Remember Crusoe? Miss Guided? How about Journeyman? Neither do we. Pardon our cynicism, but if you’re interested in a new broadcast network series this fall, here’s a little advice: Don’t get too attached. We took a look back at the success rates of debut series for ABC, CBS, The CW, FOX and NBC over the last five television seasons, and the numbers are grim. Statistically, only 1 out of 3 new series will see the light of a second season. Even fewer will last beyond the sophomore slump to season 3. The worst year for debut series came in 2008-2009, […]

NBC and CW tout new fall primetime lineups with preview specials

By Jeff Pfeiffer Follow @ChannelGuideJP Fall is in the air! Around here, at least, you can feel it with the days getting darker a tad earlier than they had been, and some slightly cooler temps in the evenings. But even more so in our office you can sense the change in seasons by the non-stop flood of Fall 2011 programming info we have been getting from TV networks since July. At this point our staff is pretty well-versed in what is coming up, but you may not be. To help you out, some networks are presenting preview specials highlighting new […]
