NEW! Is Alaskan Bush People Fake? Does It Matter?
Viewers of Discovery Channel’s Alaskan Bush People have been wondering if the four episodes of the Brown family’s adventures in the wilderness are all they’re going to get. The new show Siberian Cut takes over the Tuesday night time slot and no new episodes of Alaskan Bush People are currently scheduled.
[Update: A new episode of Alaskan Bush People, titled “The Wild Life,” premieres Sunday, June 15, at 10pm ET/PT on Discovery Channel. Based on the show’s description, it sounds like it might be a highlights/recap/additional unaired footage type of show: “After facing unparalleled obstacles, the Browns reflect on their past year of living in the Alaskan Bush while providing surprise revelations about the family’s lifestyle.”
Last seen, the Brown family suffered another setback as the boat they were using to scout a new home in southeast Alaska hit an object, took on water and sank at the dock. The family made it off the boat safely, but were left with an uncertain future.
They can’t possibly let the show end like that, can they?
Well, the news here is that there is no news. According to a Discovery Channel spokesman, the network has not announced whether or not Alaskan Bush People will be returning.
As for the Brown family, all nine of them were in Los Angeles in January for the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour and were on a panel to promote the show, which at the time was scheduled to air on Animal Planet. (So no, they didn’t starve or freeze or anything after their boat went down in Episode 4.) You can learn more about them and see some pretty interesting photos of the family at their official website. Also, do read this article by Zaz Hollander of Alaska Dispatch, who did some investigating into some of the behind-the-scenes aspects of the show that have been debated in these recaps.
At the panel, Billy Brown summed up the origin of his family’s Alaskan adventure as well as how the TV show came into existence:
“I was born in Fort Worth, Texas, and my family died when I was 16, and I kind of hit the road. When Ami and I got together, we traveled all over the place, and we found that as we were going places, we never were really content where we were. We kept getting we’d go to the country, and it wasn’t really enough country. We kept getting deeper and deeper in, and then, when Alaska opened up to us, it was like a it was like a ready made home to us. And when we got up I have written children’s books for my kids and stuff and a book about my life, One Wave at a Time, and our guys went in when you go to the harbor shacks and stuff, we get Internet every once in a while, and our guys went in, Bam especially, and he put a website for the kids’ books. And through that, a guy got in touch with us, and we ended up here. And I am the one that didn’t want to come. …
This is, you know, not what we had planned. We spent 30 years of our lives trying to stay as far away from this kind of stuff as we could, and people. And we discussed it a lot, and I guess … it was Ami that really talked me into it more that we thought it would be cool if people could really see how we live because I don’t think you guys know people who really still live that way, because it’s not a movie. It’s us.”

Why do people jump to conclusions of their own before they know the real truth about that person, here is how I look at it with a open mind, and until u can walk in that person’s shoes why judge them so fast and when u don’t even know them personally and u don’t even really know the big truth about it all but what u are hearing from someone else and unless u see it with yr own eyes why do u believe that it is the TRUTH ananyway,I think the brown family are good people and cause some others mite feel jealousy against them can sometimes cause small minded people and drama queens to say bad things about a person, but I would love to meet the family and spend some time with them, I and I will be praying for the Brown’s family and that everything will turn out good for them good luck & God bless all of u!!! Your true friend (Estelle)
Let’s set the record straight. These are not personal conclusions. These are not opinions. These are the findings of court cases. These are facts. Sometimes the truth is beautiful and sometimes it’s ugly, but it’s still the truth!

I just hope that 20 year old girl takes her money or her fraud PFD and buys her some teeth. She has been eating too much fast food and sweats at the motel they live in.
So are you guys at the Discovery Channel bringing back the Browns or not???? I liked the show. I don’t care of much of it may be fake or how much might be fact. I miss it. I always wonder why things get taken off the TV that are good and then garbage replaces it. Please put the Alaskan Bush People back on.
I like the show it was one of the best hope u bring it back my grandchildren an I enjoy watching it to gather
Shameless self-promotion! I’m recapping Discovery Channel’s new “Sons of Winter,” which is actually kinda good. If you like what I do with ABP (or you don’t like what I do and just hate-read it), check out my recap of SoW here: https://www.staytunedmag.com/2015/04/29/discovery-channel-sons-of-winter-recap-rite-of-passage/

I am no fan of the discovery channel anymore with shows like mermaid, megladon. They have fallen to the likes of gossip journalism, but with all of that said I do watch the show. I like the closeness of the family. It may not be real but I do like it.
This show is a total joke!! No planning!! Why would anyone wait until November to start building a house?? None of the essentials have been stored for the winter like Firewood, Food etc!! If you want to see a show of how it’s really like watch Alaska the Last Frontier and the Kilchers will show you how it’s done!!
Why would anyone wait until November to start building a house in Alaska?? This show is totally unrealistic! Firewood has not been cut and stored for the winter. Not enough food has been prepared for the long winters that you have in Alaska. They wouldn’t last a month living up there according to what I have seen of the show. Their lack of planning is totally amateurish. This is a joke of a show and certainly not representative of what you need to have and do for survival. Now if you want to see what it takes to live in the Alaskan winter watch Alaska the last frontier and the Kilchers will show you how it’s done!!
exactly when will my show come back on. we have to vote in my house what we watch on TV.
Alaskan Bush People is the only show we all agree on
please let us know When.
I latterly LOVE this program. Search the tv each day to see if they are on. I have seen each episode at least 4 or 5 times. I can’t get enough of it. The last I saw was them in the new cabin rejoicing they finally got it built. I would be very unhappy it the Discovery channel drops the program. I get sick of the other programs of soo much violence . I love the program.
\
This is the only show on TV you can find that doesn’t have violence (killing deer and punching fish in the head aside)? I can’t think of a single other show on Discovery that has any violence to speak of. Are you watching the Military channel all day or something?
Not to get all technical on you but a construction company from Juneau built the cabin, not the Browns. The Browns only did a few small things in order for the film crew to get some shots of them. Also people all over Alaska were rolling laughing over the part where they never finished the house and tried to make it look like stapling cardboard on the walls was going to keep them warm. As if they ever spent a single day in the cabin. Why would they care when they lived full time in town in the Icy Straights Inn with satellite TV, private rooms and a full bar. You think the Browns could have at least spent a couple of nights on the land when they were filming. Nope, not a single night
Please renew their contract & let them go onto season 3, I like many others, love this show. Please renew their contract & have them return to Discovery. Please don’t cancel them. Bring Back The Browns!!!!!!!!!!
I would love to continue seeing the life of the Browns. It contains humor, sincerity, and the real life of Alaskan living. Please do whatever it takes to bring the family back!
When we lived in Okla our little oh house was insulated with leaves and cardboard boxes we had a wood heating stove and outside batheroom
Now that I think about it it was paper feed sacks we had over leaves and brush no curtains but we had some old material we found in someones trash.
I am not disagreeing that the Browns have done wrong in their ways. However, you also have to blame Discovery. Everyone in this situation is to blame. I know there are many survival skills that the Browns lack, but I am still a fan of the show. I am a fan of the fantasy that the Browns and Discovery are trying to portray. Also, just because you do not like the show, or you disagree with the things these people have done (as I do) is no reason to try and shame those who are fans of the show. For all you k ow they are fans of the fantasy of loving off the grid and in the wild, not the cast of a show. As adults, there is not need to shame those who see or believe things differently than ourselves. There are many grown folk who are extremely niave, and believe that a “reality TV show” is just that: reality. Then there are those who know that reality TV is usually always bs.
I personally hope everybody that watches the show truly has a good time. I have never had a problem with that. The shaming that you speak of comes from people who claim that everything the Browns do is wonderful and they are idols that we should be looking up to. Like pam morgan two post below yours that say the show “tries to teach truth, ethics, and morals.”. Like heck it does. Plus the 60 felony counts doesn’t exactly sit well with a lot of folks. Right now it is only charges, but we will know a lot more in June. Basically Lexi there is a huge difference from fantasy in a movie like Frozen, and just outright lying about everything. Just can’t agree that lying can be confused with fantasy.
I want to see what happens from the moment they were all standing in joy in the cabin. I want to see how they fixed it up and made dinner and beds and all the other things people do. No fair. let us see how they live the rest of their lives and survive each day. Come on.
So do I carol, my family came form the hills in Okla and we ate from the land took baths from a well until the early 60’s we moved to K.C. and they made fun of how we talked and what we wore.
I love the show and cant wait for it to come back on. I for one true or not enjoy the way they are trying to live or portray the way they live. Its like it should be. Imagine turning your channel to something else from Hollywood and actually find a show that really tries to teach truth, ethics, and morals. Now their after the Duggars and next they will be after The Last Frontier. People always have to have something to have issues with. I for one like the alaskan shows.
Glad you enjoy the show because that is what a TV show should be. Most of us (not Ryan the lucky dog)) don’t get paid to spend our free time watching. Hopefully it is an entertaining experience.
“Imagine turning your channel to something else from Hollywood and actually find a show that really tries to teach truth, ethics, and morals.”. Forgive me as about 10 muscles went in complete spasms on that statement. If made up a story that lies about almost every single thing from a family that is going to court in 60 days charged with a whopping 60 felony counts of theft and fraud isn’t about everything OPPOSITE of truth, ethics and morals, I don’t know what is. The moral here is take everything in a reality show and be very very wary that anything is true. This show just takes making up stuff to a whole nether level.
But again, by all means enjoy the show.
Surely you don’t advocate theft, fraud, parasitism, and bullies. Apparently, you’ve not read the blogs from their victims. And, if you think their Class C felonies are something, just wait for their trials for Class A felonies when they begin– sever firearms violations. This is what really finished them. Remember, the government is everywhere, even in Alaska. You get what you vote for, and if you keep voting Democrat then more traditional American freedoms will continue to be lost. There’s no place to hide anymore. Mores the pity. It’s already an Orwellian nightmare! In other words, because of decades of stupidity, complacency, apathy, and duplicity; unless a miracle happens, it’s already too late!
Keep voting republican and I hope you enjoy the dark ages again, stupid response on an opinion on a reality show.
Again, yet another example of a person getting personal because they can’t sustain an intellectual argument. Thanks for proving my point. Political pathological intensity always makes for poor expression. Your sentence has five mistakes. Oh, I forgot, you should get a “B” for “breathing.” When under the operating knife, you better pray your doctor is a Republican.
Bill: Just found out and verified that all those Alaskans who get their oil “dividend” state checks are going from being taxed 15 percent to 40 percent. Still want to vote Democrat? So much for your “government is best” arguments.
I am no survival expert, however, I do watch Alaska the last frontier, and have compared it to the Alaskan Bush People. For realism, Alaska the Last Frontier really shows how it is done, and they are concerned about the legal aspects of hunting and gathering. The Alaskan Bush People are like babies in the wilderness, not much thought process goes into the daily workings living in the untamed wilderness. However, they surely are full of character, and it is better than most of the reality shows on tv.
The trial from Billy Browns 24 counts of fraud (class C felony) starts in June.
It seems to me that this reality show is not reality at all. Hipe is making it interesting and exciting. The Browns sound like a vagabond family mooching off the land and others without jobs or taxes, etc. the fact that the a Discovery channel is exploiting them and they are exploiting the tv show is the drama that draws the viewers. It’s not at all what we know as real.
What’s interesting here is that they have 30,000 dollars worth of new firearms they can’t use properly– muzzle control, operation, aiming, cleaning, training, permits (like the other shows and all of us), etc. AND, with all those firearms and wildlife violations caught on film, the California film crews and Discovery are also liable. Maybe Discovery has already been visited by the FBI, ATF, and various Alaskan and California state agencies? How does it feel? Government is everywhere, even in Alaska. AND, California government claims jurisdiction over all Californians, even if they’re not in California! Welcome to the world created by the “liberals!”
as a Californian, you are greatly misinformed, or stupid. my guess is misinformed, but you dispise me for where I live, and think where I live defines me, you describe all people from here as something you don’t like O.K., my buddy is a teabagger, neighbor is a liberal. you hate who you need too, perhaps your kids can grow to be better than you, just keep the biased hatred in their view and let them choose(I grew up watching alcoholic cigarette smokers as biased as you sound, so I never smoke or get drunk), as a kid I wondered whether booze and smokes were a good idea and grew up a better person, I wondered do black people really smell bad, as those drunken adults seemed to think, I found , no they don’t. the camera crews you speak of i’ve been told come from England, not sure but you hate t.v. crews, hate calif., so ipso facto, those crummy crews came from calif., so they have to be liberals as all Californians must be, this state gives more money to the federal government than the feds spend in our state, where do you live? the confederancy(or parasitic, losers from the slavery wars of the united states), those states take in nearly two dollars in fed spending for every one their residents pay in taxes, where do YOU live?, if it is a parasite state do you have the honesty to admit your state sucks at Californias teat, while bitching about it, hell your high horse is way up there right?
Uninformed reactionary name-calling. In fact, if you check the California State Statutes on the Internet, on California.gov, you’ll find I’m correct. The truth hurts? Yes, the California statues completely support my observations. If you don’t understand them, and they’re clear enough, then maybe you need to consult a lawyer because they’re MANDATORY and your unrelated, incoherent, convoluted, and emotional argumentation simply won’t fly in court. Lastly, it’s really unnecessary to get personal and getting personal is not indicative of an educated person. As for your unfortunate upbringing which obviously haunts you, it’s not my fault. I do feel sorry for you, but projecting it on others won’t help you, and is wrong and unfair. I just thank God I had great and humanitarian parents.
What I don’t understand with the recent developments is how you can go from the neighbors helping the Browns finish their home at the start of winter and then the following that up with leaving it because they heard some gunshots at night! Discovery indicated it was because they were not welcome? Come on! They’re either wussies or they were looking for an excuse to get back down south a little?
Completely an excuse. There was an article in the Alaska Dispatch that investigated what happened, and wouldn’t you know it neither the Browns nor the film crew reported anything about any gunshots to the Alaska State Troopers or any other law enforcement. An angry neighbor got tired of the camera crew and their helicopter buzzing his house and he shot some fireworks into the air to let them know to get away. Wouldn’t you know it the camera crew and the Browns got a hold of law enforcement ASAP to report that. But when people shoot at you to possibly kill you, aw shucks, that is no big deal. YEA RIGHT!Lets even look at the facts for a second. The neighbors helped them FRAME the house. This is confirmed that this part happened because it did get cold and snow (wow, something that was actually real on this show). When you look at the house when it was supposedly done it wasn’t entirely closed in, had zero insulation or any sort of interior closure. There was no source of heat such as a wood stove or any sort of chimney installed. Where were they going to take the story next… Three Browns die of exposure and four in hospital, more at 11? There was no where left to take the storyline. You don’t start your house in Alaska after the snow falls and expect to survive. So they hit the reset button by making up some dumb shots in the night storyline and started over back in Southeast Alaska.
Think about some of the quick facts they through out there if you were paying attention. The narrator tells us they sold everything like the SUV and the house as they are boarding the ferry to leave. Ummm, they sold a house as they went running for their lives in the middle of the night? Selling real estate takes time. Of course this is the Browns so they probably bartered it for 6 beaver pelts, a cord of wood, and an old radio. If you just stop and think about anything in this show, it is fake and made up in every way possible. Yet people still love the Browns. You wouldn’t believe the amount of people that will say the Browns are not in trouble with the law and haters are just making it up. Well my friends, in 10 weeks we will see how made up it is.
A little bitter there, David……..aren’t we? Why do you feel the need to “expose” the Brown family so much? What did they do to you?
The Discovery channel is showing an Alaskan Bush People marathon this weekend. Has me wondering if they are milking this out for all it is worth in a last swan song, or getting ready to show a few more episodes. It is only about 10 weeks before the Browns have to be in an Alaskan courtroom to face 60 felony counts so time is running out. When that happens the clock is going to strike midnight. That isn’t going to be good publicity no matter how you spin it. Be interesting where they go from here. Seems to me that if they were going to be showing new episodes they wouldn’t have taken a mid-season break and would have kept them rolling before they run up against their trial. We will see I guess
Various newspaper sources say the same thing, so you’re correct, and only about a dozen charges involve fraud, theft, and forgery of government checks, food stamps, etc., etc., and sanitary health violations for human waste. (Remember, government is everywhere.) Most are firearms and wildlife violations, including the illegal use of pistols, rifles, and shotguns. What is interesting is that California pioneered mandatory sentencing beginning with firearms violations, including being an accessory when promoting or inciting such. So, the film crews, helicopter pilots, and executives, if from California, are liable as well. So much for “liberalism!” Remember, not only will a judge claim ignorance of the law is no excuse, his hands are tied with mandatory sentencing. You get what you vote for! Poetic justice! They’re going down! (The other shows have been double-checked in their paperwork and actions, and they’re legal.) I say let these Californians be subject to the same laws they’ve made all of us be subject! Laws hold for everyone! That’s why we must be very careful when enacting laws. They can come back and bite you. “The government that governs least governs best.” Let these Californians get a taste of the very big and all-intrusive government they helped to impose on the rest of us!
You scary Mary need to be watched by the government. People like you is why the FBI hasa wanted list. Maybe go watch the Kardashians, smoke some weed and get drunk….just have some fun, geeeez!
Hey Blissfully Billy,
Are you seriously offering anything more than merely weed and alcohol? Once you go Republican you’ll never go back! Forget those silly overly sensitive flower girls who do pottery and mimic leftist politics to hide their mediocre poetry. You need a tough woman with pain and money to make you hold a note and write a complete sentence. Do you want to be happy, and be more inspired, and have more fun than an NYC graphic novelist? Then you need to stop hanging-out at sophomoric and self-absorbed pseudo-intellectual coffee houses, and get with a real woman in a bank lobby who can train you in the joys of capitalism, kaki, and class. Proletarians just don’t know how to party!
Scary Mary
As the daughter of a REAL survival expert who trained pilots to survive in the jungle etc I am very alarmed at what this show and the Browns are imparting. The series is full of what typical non-survival experts would think should be included. Trust me I was trained in what to do to survive and these folks have not a clue and would fie if left alone in the scenario detected.
First no one with any bush or survival skills would even think to start a venture of this nature without a plan, and never this late in the season, no one. Just ask true bush people.
Exactly, this is such a big fat lie in every way. I read an article the other day where even Discovery is getting uncomfortable with how much they lie.
And Discovery is liable, in both Alaska and California, for documenting all the firearms and wildlife violations! Just wait until they get a visit from a half dozen federal agencies. By the way, the Brown’s have been supplied with about 30,000 dollars worth of various firearms which they handle recklessly. Remember, the land of fruits and nuts claims jurisdiction over any Californian party to any firearms violations no matter where they are at the time! I bet Discovery has not even told their film crews!
mary hope, hope you can get a refund on your law degree, your legalese is a bit wrong
Gosh, Chris, every time you write something it’s filled with all kinds of punctuation, grammar, and syntactical errors; filled with emotional opinions and not dispassionate facts; and, worse, the old Bolshevik technique of unnecessary personal attacks designed to hide the fact that you can’t win the intellectual argument. Thanks for your shallow attempts at (or examples of) deflection, name-calling, and obfuscation. So much for a “liberal” education, or, should I say indoctrination. Free your mind! Psychological bullies always internalize and make it personal. That’s wrong and does not contribute to the conversation!
You are correct. I have a place off the road system that I built myself and you can’t waste time always running to a store to get forgotten items. I travel alone many times at night with a snowmachine at night and always carry a survival pack on my back and even carry a flint and steel, spacebag and a small saw in my pocket in case I go though the ice and hopefully get back on top . These people would not last an hour if they were in a real bad situation. It is going to be interesting to see how the 4 adults do in jail with all the charges brought against them by the state of Alaska for lying about residency requirements to obtain the Alaskan PFD. This is a check given to the residents of Alaska because land owners do not own the subsurface rights of their property, the state does and gives this money to the residents for the minerals extracted.
You were quoted prominently in this article. Who knew this train wreck was going to be your claim to fame…

Nice! I got blockquoted! I was supposed to be working on a new ABP story, but got distracted with this Surviving Marriage thing. Had too much built-up snark since ABP season ended. https://www.staytunedmag.com/2015/03/26/ae-surviving-marriage-recap-cleburn-and-april/
