NEW! Is Alaskan Bush People Fake? Does It Matter?

Viewers of Discovery Channel’s Alaskan Bush People have been wondering if the four episodes of the Brown family’s adventures in the wilderness are all they’re going to get. The new show Siberian Cut takes over the Tuesday night time slot and no new episodes of Alaskan Bush People are currently scheduled.

[Update: A new episode of Alaskan Bush People, titled “The Wild Life,” premieres Sunday, June 15, at 10pm ET/PT on Discovery Channel. Based on the show’s description, it sounds like it might be a highlights/recap/additional unaired footage type of show: “After facing unparalleled obstacles, the Browns reflect on their past year of living in the Alaskan Bush while providing surprise revelations about the family’s lifestyle.”

Last seen, the Brown family suffered another setback as the boat they were using to scout a new home in southeast Alaska hit an object, took on water and sank at the dock. The family made it off the boat safely, but were left with an uncertain future.

They can’t possibly let the show end like that, can they?

Well, the news here is that there is no news. According to a Discovery Channel spokesman, the network has not announced whether or not Alaskan Bush People will be returning.

As for the Brown family, all nine of them were in Los Angeles in January for the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour and were on a panel to promote the show, which at the time was scheduled to air on Animal Planet. (So no, they didn’t starve or freeze or anything after their boat went down in Episode 4.) You can learn more about them and see some pretty interesting photos of the family at their official website. Also, do read this article by Zaz Hollander of Alaska Dispatch, who did some investigating into some of the behind-the-scenes aspects of the show that have been debated in these recaps.

At the panel, Billy Brown summed up the origin of his family’s Alaskan adventure as well as how the TV show came into existence:

“I was born in Fort Worth, Texas, and my family died when I was 16, and I kind of hit the road. When Ami and I got together, we traveled all over the place, and we found that as we were going places, we never were really content where we were. We kept getting we’d go to the country, and it wasn’t really enough country. We kept getting deeper and deeper in, and then, when Alaska opened up to us, it was like a it was like a ready made home to us. And when we got up I have written children’s books for my kids and stuff and a book about my life, One Wave at a Time, and our guys went in when you go to the harbor shacks and stuff, we get Internet every once in a while, and our guys went in, Bam especially, and he put a website for the kids’ books. And through that, a guy got in touch with us, and we ended up here. And I am the one that didn’t want to come. …

This is, you know, not what we had planned. We spent 30 years of our lives trying to stay as far away from this kind of stuff as we could, and people. And we discussed it a lot, and I guess … it was Ami that really talked me into it more that we thought it would be cool if people could really see how we live because I don’t think you guys know people who really still live that way, because it’s not a movie. It’s us.”

  1. Please bring this family back. For so many reasons…We love The family, learn things of importance every show, like how to barter, fish with our hands, etc. When the pole shift happens, millions of people may find the info in this program invaluable. Rebuilding homes, etc.
Working as a team with others, etc. Credit to the Brown family for their courage & fortitude!

  3. Bring this show back!!! Me and my husband are a couple from las vegas and we were so into this show and now we have nothing to watch!! I can’t believe they rather air “naked and afraid” so boring.

  4. This show captivated me from the moment I started watching it. I don’t know why Discovery only aired a few episodes then stopped “cold turkey”. If the network wants a show that will give em ratings then they need to bring the Browns back!!!

  5. I heard that the family and the show got a lot of flak because people thought that they couldn’t be a real family. I dislike reality shows AND tv but lived in Alaska for 12 years and have a life long love and passion to live self sufficiently in the wilderness. I can tell you that this show is one of the most real shows out there. I laugh when I watch it because I now live in Oregon and it brings back all the recollections of Alaska’s beauty and the quirky, off-beat, totally lovable, free spirited kind of people who live there. I LOVE the Brown Family and I get them and their lifestyle. I think it’s awesome and I am actually a little envious of them as I sit in my recliner, sipping iced tea with the air conditioner running. Really. They have guts and the have one another and most of, freedom. LOVE YOU GUYS!

  6. We have shows called deadliest catch raw. I love this show but not the raw footage. Ridiculous. Or Amish mafia for what? I much rather learn about people who are currently living the way my great- greats did. If you think he doesn’t have a job then you aren’t watching the show. Being a hunter gatherer is a 24/7 job. I know because I lived it for 6 months and felt likened I was dying every day. Please bring back this show

  7. Life below zero is a real Alaskan experience, these people do not appeal to me at all.

  8. We love watching this program. i set timer on phone to reminded. me when it comes on. our family enjoys Nature programs. we love how the family works together & even living in close quarters they still work as a team to get done what needs to be done. also. the children show respect. & love for their parents. also they have been raised that your word is your bond. in todays society, many people don’t keep their word. please bring back Alaskan Bush People. thank. you very much.

  9. I think the show is great, whether or not the situations were scripted. I live in a very urban area, raised 2 kids here, and have sadly watched the destructiveness that has corroded youth over the last 30+ years. A few days ago an 11 yr old was shot in the chest by a 14 yr old….so you go ahead Brown family….you guys have the right idea

  10. This is more important than anything said here. I agree with Martin but GET THAT LITTLE GIRL INTO A SAFE PLACE! I think this father is a disgrace trying to profit from a situation he is too lazy to go out and get a job.

    • I think ur a idot, just because the father doesn’t have a job
Doesn’t make him a bad father. So all the people that don’t have a job are bad parents? Maybe the people that work form 9 to 5
Are idots. This guy is living off the land and doing what our ancestors did many years ago. Just becuse he doesn’t do what we consider the norm who is to say he is wrong ?
Walk a mile in his shoes before you judge.
I am jealous of mr brown and his family if the end of the
World comes who so u think will live and do well?
Dam sure not you, I’m sure your a fat loser that lives
      With his mom.
Get a life pecker head !!!

      • Why don’t you learn the spell the real words.
u will never make ur way in the world with ur childish texting.

  11. I am waiting for this special show to come back. There is great heart and soul, that we who love the show can see and somehow we relate, to the Brown family. The bush people of Alaska, on discovery channel was a surprise to me; what is this, I thought. Well, I soon discovered, a show that caught my interest. The family, there lives and that potential, is there for more. We all want to see and know about this unique family. I for one. Love the show and the Brown’s.

  12. Hi really like this so much bring this back please

so are so darn to earth, I like how everyone really takes care of one another, in this family, how the Father is always looking out for his family,

and the the Mother, how she cares so deeply for every member

keep this going, it really is good, looking forward to seeing this come back,

  13. My husband and I enjoyed watching this series. I hope it comes back on,you can work out all the kinks and get it back on track.

    Thanks

  14. I truly did enjoy this show as did my children. We hope you will keep this program as a weekly show.We look forward to seeing the next show.

  15. I enjoyed watching the bush people in their daily chores of trying to have a life. I even looked forward to it coming on every week. I wish it was back on. Good show!

  16. The reason this show hits home for me is because , I have had two house fires within 2 Years so I understand what is like to start over and than the worse possible thing that could happen to a mother I lost my son he passed at the young age of 23 , seeing this family make ‘s me Believe in everything again . I Hope everything in your life goes better and I hope fate stops kicking you in the ass.

    • This show is is terrible and insults anyone with an iq above 90. The situations presented are obviously scripted and there is no way they are “authentic”. Look at the way the family handles firearms! The scene with them shooting shotguns would have been funny if it wasn’t so dangerous. And who punches a salmon like an idiot after catching it? And finally, who in the hell RUNS through the woods? An idiot that’s who Discovery is taking the piss again, and their fascination with all things Alaska is just a bit much.

I get that some folks like this for the entertainment, but frankly, I am sick to death of “reality tv”. If these people are “real bush people”, then I am Elmer Fudd.

      • “Authentic.”
        “Reality tv.”
        “Real bush people.”
For someone with an “IQ above 90,” it is sad you don’t know common grammar rules.

      • Fire? No! Idiots? Yes! If you build a “house” on property that doesn’t belong to you and the park service comes in a dismantles your “house” it’s not tragedy and it’s defiantly not a fire. Get a job bums! Maybe go back to the pizza place you worked at in Southeast AK. If you aren’t sure if they are hiring, call them with your iPhone. ( the one you had when you worked there) True Bush People! Not even close
