NEW! Is Alaskan Bush People Fake? Does It Matter?
Viewers of Discovery Channel’s Alaskan Bush People have been wondering if the four episodes of the Brown family’s adventures in the wilderness are all they’re going to get. The new show Siberian Cut takes over the Tuesday night time slot and no new episodes of Alaskan Bush People are currently scheduled.
[Update: A new episode of Alaskan Bush People, titled “The Wild Life,” premieres Sunday, June 15, at 10pm ET/PT on Discovery Channel. Based on the show’s description, it sounds like it might be a highlights/recap/additional unaired footage type of show: “After facing unparalleled obstacles, the Browns reflect on their past year of living in the Alaskan Bush while providing surprise revelations about the family’s lifestyle.”
Last seen, the Brown family suffered another setback as the boat they were using to scout a new home in southeast Alaska hit an object, took on water and sank at the dock. The family made it off the boat safely, but were left with an uncertain future.
They can’t possibly let the show end like that, can they?
Well, the news here is that there is no news. According to a Discovery Channel spokesman, the network has not announced whether or not Alaskan Bush People will be returning.
As for the Brown family, all nine of them were in Los Angeles in January for the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour and were on a panel to promote the show, which at the time was scheduled to air on Animal Planet. (So no, they didn’t starve or freeze or anything after their boat went down in Episode 4.) You can learn more about them and see some pretty interesting photos of the family at their official website. Also, do read this article by Zaz Hollander of Alaska Dispatch, who did some investigating into some of the behind-the-scenes aspects of the show that have been debated in these recaps.
At the panel, Billy Brown summed up the origin of his family’s Alaskan adventure as well as how the TV show came into existence:
“I was born in Fort Worth, Texas, and my family died when I was 16, and I kind of hit the road. When Ami and I got together, we traveled all over the place, and we found that as we were going places, we never were really content where we were. We kept getting we’d go to the country, and it wasn’t really enough country. We kept getting deeper and deeper in, and then, when Alaska opened up to us, it was like a it was like a ready made home to us. And when we got up I have written children’s books for my kids and stuff and a book about my life, One Wave at a Time, and our guys went in when you go to the harbor shacks and stuff, we get Internet every once in a while, and our guys went in, Bam especially, and he put a website for the kids’ books. And through that, a guy got in touch with us, and we ended up here. And I am the one that didn’t want to come. …
This is, you know, not what we had planned. We spent 30 years of our lives trying to stay as far away from this kind of stuff as we could, and people. And we discussed it a lot, and I guess … it was Ami that really talked me into it more that we thought it would be cool if people could really see how we live because I don’t think you guys know people who really still live that way, because it’s not a movie. It’s us.”

Does anybody know what happened with the Browns court case? Did they get probation or was it dismissed?
I hope TLC does some follow up for those that fought for them and wanted them to succeed. If the family is open to it we would love an email address and/or a physical address. We have started gathering for the family. May God bless you and your family. Hope to hear from you to Cyndi.
Why would you want to help criminals? Are you not opposed to stealing and any form of dishonesty? One trait that builds character is honesty which we teach our children by our example and our teachings of integrity. After all we want and expect honesty no matter who it is. Why would we want to support anything less in others?
May I offer some advice? If you want to help others there are many abused and battered women out there that need help, a number of children and women who are forced into the sex trade (sex slavery.) Any number of different organizations that could use your resources and or help. To those truly in need you would be their God sent angel.
What are you talking about? Jeez…
You don’t understand what you read? Ok let me simplify it a bit. She obviously wants to help the browns. There are people who feel sorry for them and mistakenly think them destitute or homeless. If she wants to help those in need there are any number of places that she could go to help those truly in need. I gave some examples.
The first paragraph was about honesty. The Browns lied and stole from the people of Alaska. There are plenty of organizations that a family can get help from. The Browns did not need to lie and steal. When we ignore that fact and excuse their dishonesty then we are encouraging theft and other forms of dishonesty. They have proven over and over they can’t be trusted!
Get off your high horse the guy was just asking you a ? You don’t have to be a snot
Why would you think I was on a high horse? I was simply answering a question. What was it in my response to this guy that you accuse me of being on a high horse? Hmm?
Women’s groups. Women forced into sex trades let me guess your a tree hugging lezbo.
Wrong again! For the second time (if you had read what I said to you initially…..) I gave an example of an area where people do need help. I could have mentioned the various charities that provide food, medical attention , and schooling to children in third world countries which says nothing about my life. That was all it was an example where she could help those really in need.
Maybe he said you are on a high horse because your response was attacking someone for wanting to help these people instead of someone you would help. If people want to help them than let them. You can not judge a person by what you see in the media. None of us know this family and their true story we know what the tv show said about them. So, what they lived on land that wasn’t theirs. They built their home they didn’t move into someone’s home a squat there. What do you think it is whenever homeless people live in alleys, under bridges, in their cars?? All of them are on someone’s property. Are they all criminals too? Do they not deserve the help of more fortunate people?
Once again poeple who do bad get the biggest breaks, why would you want to watch this family of law breakers. Read the latest stories of what they did. UNREAL
Also what REAL parent would make those kids live like that{when small}? Its abuse to make that little girl sleep in a freezing mud hut, I cant beleive the state dosent step in and take that child.
As I understood it the show wanted them to sleep in the hut while they were building the ‘house.’ It sounded to me as if the Browns wanted to stay in better accommodations. From what I read the discovery film crew stayed in the local hotel.
She may end up a ward of the state yet. Would be the best thing if the parents end up in prison. The ‘adult’ children don’t seem as if they have the maturity level to take care of her among other things. I hope for the best for her.
Wake up do you think they slept in that trapper shack? If so I have some beach front property in Iran I can sell you.
If these people didn’t meet the residency requirements for the PFD they probably didn’t meet the residency requirements for hunting fishing license. If the state goes after them for this there will be more charges especially if they took any big game.
Why? I ask the same question and in my opinion I think that sadly society (civilization) is falling apart. When we find ourselves supporting that which is wrong we should be looking in the direction that path is taking us individually and as a whole. We have only to look around us to see the results thus far. I believe that we are fast approaching a lawless uncivilized violent world. We all make our individual contribution. All I can do is do what I know is right, teach my family to do the same, set the example and hope for the best. That which is good will win the final battle and it needs our contribution.
How do you know these stories are true do you believe everything you read. I know them I have done Snowbird in the past many times sometimes she’s a little smelly but she’s still a nice person. A little kinky but that’s OK.
I liked watching the Brown family for they made me feel like I wanted to live off the land. But I can,t because of health problems and I use to go camping when I was younger but now I can,t. DARN IT !!!
Billy brown was just charged with stealing over $13000 filing fraudulent PFD claims in Alaska. His near life will be in prison. A few other family members were also charged. This guy and his family are frauds. I have lived off the road system for years and these people won’t last a year. You have to be self sufficient. Hell, I even had to stitch a band cut on my leg once. Many of these shows only have entertainment value with no real practical lessons on what really living on your own is about.
Oof. Yeah, this is bad news for the Browns.
http://www.ktuu.com/news/news/stars-of-alaskan-bush-people-reality-show-charged-with-felony-dividend-fraud-theft/29285166
I don’t doubt that Brown is a bit of a character, but this anonymous “tip from outside the state” stuff has a bureaucratic stink to it.
I love the show and my whole family loves it too !!! Refreshing !!!!
Texas wishes them the “Best” !!! We want it back !!!!
P.S.
Poop on all the haters! They will never know how to live and fend for themselves !!! Good, ’cause they’ll be the first to go and more for me !!!!
If you think you can learn survival skills from watching Alaskan Bush People you better not stake your life on it. These shows are for entertainment only. Alaskan Bush People is not real. Don’t take my word for it because you can find an awful lot on the net about the show from media coverage and other sources.
My problem is that Discovery is leading people to believe this show is real when it is not. That is a lie that the media does to get and keep viewers. Discovery out did themselves this time with a story to get people’s sympathy which is simply manipulation of emotion. That is what I do not like. I think that if they told the complete truth it still would be entertaining without being dishonest.
Second–This show is misleading in many ways and one of them is that people who watch this stuff on the telly believe exactly what you stated above, ” they will never know how to live and fend for themselves.” I repeat you can not learn how to survive in the bush by watching these so called survival shows. Shame on Discovery! They should put FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY! Before someone gets hurt or killed. And if that happens which I pray it does not but if it does I hope for a law suit and wide media coverage to protect others.
Enjoy the show and be entertained but don’t believe everything you see or allow yourself to be led to conclusions.
Six of the family were charged by a Grand Jury for fraud. The new show will be how to survive in prison.
If you come into the public eye there is always someone who is going to investigate you and your background. Happens all the time.
I’m sure if someone does more digging no telling what all will come to light. Should be interesting if that happens.
I’m wondering how they know they were not in the state. A paper trail perhaps? Maybe have crossed the border into Canada to leave? Well maybe not they were living in the bush the entire time according to the show. The show is soooo real.
Good people do what the Browns have done. That is the role model we all want and if we don’t then we are bad hateful people. Good grief!
At least we didn’t all fall hook line and sinker in that dirty Brown water!
So the next show is going to be how to survive in prison, eh? I know there must be a group out there who will want to watch it to learn how to survive prison life. Maybe the Brown fans? Well Discovery…..let’s get to work! (Sorry I couldn’t resist expressing my irritation at some of the posts.)
I just could not believe the amount of people who refuse to see what is so obvious. It was shocking to realize how easy it is for the media to lead people into believing what is not true. I heard that people were sending money to the Browns! Of course we all want to help people in need but sometimes we don’t get enough information or the right information before we act so our emotions and wallet ends up being scammed! Then when you try and help prevent that you are verbally attacked as if you are the bad guy!
It doesn’t take much for the state to go after PFD fraud cases. Mailing addresses that are PO boxes, no utility bills, and filing for kids that aren’t in the school system. This is not the first case to be seen in this local paper the last few months. They go some lady with kids that visited a few times for the Phillipines. She claimed there were residents and filed for the money and got caught.
I’m sure these type give themselves away in a lot of ways.
I recall reading somewhere about the Browns going to Texas a couple of years ago I think. Supposedly that was the state the parents were from originally. Didn’t say when they went back to AK.
i love this show, I don’t care if it’s real or fake I enjoy it im in the side or real, I enjoy this tv series i love it my boyfriend and I watched it and we want more!! Does negative people shouldn’t matter what they say, this show makes a lot of people happy and not because some of this people don’t like it we shouldn’t be allowed to watch it, like some of u have said its not hard to change the channel, give us more of the bushes!!! We want more:) I hope yall stay and keep making more seasons!
What a load of crap! There is not a Kens oil cat’s chance in hades of me wasting my time watching that garbage again. Discovery needs to hire a writer with an imagination cuz this one flunked miserably.
Enjoy the show! My husband did time in service and enjoys the peace and joy these people have. Hope they continue the series!
Love the show & love the people, down to earth & morally sound. I hope they make another season!
Morally sound? Six of them were just indicted for fraud for filing more than one PFD application. The oy filiming you will see of Billy if from prison for the 24 counts he has. 60 counts total against the family with mommy in second place.
This is my opinion. If you dont want to read anything but positive then dont read this one.
Dumbest show I’ve watched.
The oldest girl reminds me of Ellie Mae on the Beverly Hillbillies. I was expecting her to go look for a husband who could wrestle her and win.
A couple of the boys remind me of Jethro. Then there is the monkey in the trees.
What man dreams of spending time with his date in a tree? Maybe he could build a tree house for his future wife if he can find a wife. Does Alaska have zoos? Sheesh!
Ma and pa remind me of a cross between hillbillies and neanderthals. Complete with a bambam.
Ma and pa are not making good decisions. Considering they don’t have a stable home maybe the state can go get that poor child and get her into a good foster home where she can be socialized and grow up in a healthier environment before it’s too late.
Furthermore ma and pa both seem lazy. Looks as if he has kept those children of his isolated to do all the work for him. Bartering his five boys indeed! Didn’t include himself in that barter I noticed! He’s not going to encourage them to get married that’s for certainity.
You should stick with the bold & the beautiful,as this is real life & not complicated enough for you.
Life is complicated. Living in civilization is difficult enough. Gets more complicated when one is trying to survive in the jungles of South America or trying to survive anywhere Civilization is not. Maybe you should try it and see just how different it is from what you are seeing on tv.
Well I have lived in the bush for years and I saw this show twice and they’d never survive a winter on their own. I also know people that live near where they were trying to build a place and they thought that between the whole family their wasn’t an IQ over 50. The six charged with fraud will fit right in with the rest o the prison population. Fraud with a paper trail is pretty easy to get a conviction. I’m sure they will look forward to fan mail when they are locked up as long as Bubba in the next cell can read it for them.
Far does are some harty bush people, fuk the boys crack me up there not shy asking girls out there even got there own language.
Fuk dats one of the best reality shows I’ve seen, Hurry up and make some more episodes
I watched the show out of curiosity. It was entertaining like any other sit com but a bit stupid. Needs much better scripts. After reading the other posts I’m sure it will get the ratings Discovery is looking for to keep it on the air. Afterall isn’t the bottom line all about the ratings? Whatever you think or want to say about the show isn’t important as long as you keep watching!
Every one leave the show alone, I’m sure there are a few things that are made up for TV but the show is entertaining and the brown family are brave to allow the world to watch them. I’m sad that there may not be any more shows, I’m in Australia (western Australia) and we want the show to stay. And to the people who are complaining, do u not have anything else to do. All shows that are similar to Alaskan bush people have things that u could complain about but if your complaining I say CHANGE the channel. Go the Brown family and please allow us to continue the journey with you. God bless and stay safe.
Yeppers they are brave and they decided that they wanted to continue their journey right into prison.
I don’t care if it’s real/not. Love the family closeness and how they stick together. I hope the show comes back. I hate the way it left us hanging. I would love to learn how to live that way, and be brave enough to do so.
OMG. The Alaskan Bush People are authentic. I’m from New Zealand. My family originated from a town on the East Coast of the North Island of NZ and we have family that to this day live like the Alaskans. This is made possible as our bloodlines are indigenous and we are fortunate that our lands are passed from family to family to ensure this way of life is preserved. Being a large family of course we live all over NZ but the call back to our land is ever present.
I LOVE THE BUSH PEOPLE !!
This had a chance but the media crew blew it. Nothing is believable. They tried to edit their story to believability. So they’ve been living off the land while all the kids were being born, yet he was a commercial fisherman for 29 years? Humph? Timeline problem. What about health and dental being given to children in Alaska? Bartering fish? Travel times don’t come close to making sense. Where did he get the money for the ship when he spent his last dollar on the vehicle? Where did the Starcraft boat go? On and on and on. You blew it!
Money for the ship probably came from Discovery since I’m sure they planned to sink it later.
You post a very good question about bartering personal salmon. My son is a wild life biologist and lived in Alaska for 10 years. (now in Washington state hoping for the Rockies). He and his wife have no/want no children and for a couple of years some what live a “hippie” style life traveling from “job” to” job” after they left Alaska. I was in Alaska 6 times and treasure it. The real Alaska people are most friendly and I can’t honestly say they would turn anybody in for bartering salmon anymore than they would for growing more pot than the law allows. One thing people are forgetting is the energy check. If you live in Alaska Jan 1 to Jan 1 you get a percentage of all the minerals etc. sold the past year. One year my son got $2500 and so did his wife. They saved their money and went to Hawaii 🙂 This check is different each year, but eight people is going to bring in a nice chuck of change.
They ripped the state off by filing claims for non existent people to the tune of close to $40 grand. The money comes from the people of the state giving the subsurface rights of their land. If you drill for oil here the state owns it not the surface property owner. Many people bash the PFD when they really don’t know how it works.
And we had commenters who wanted to write the Browns a check after their boat sank…
If your son read the fine print of the PFD form he would know that by takin it and leaving the state he has commuted fraud. There is a question about intending to stay in Alaska. Another free loader stealing money from the residents of the state .
I am re watching the shows. I do not believe all of what I am watching. After all there has to be some exaggeration or drama or the show would be too boring and there would not be one.
I think they are good people and we have enjoyed the show but may not continue to watch. I would like to see dad do some work!
I’m still watching the rest of the shows. I can’t figure out how….there is tons of questions..these are only a few….the boat was sinking away from the dock yet they manage to make it to the dock where the boat finishes sinking? Not only that but they and their clothes are DRY. Did they walk on water and pull the boat to the dock? Oh wait they were not wet Maybe they flew? And what happened to the other boat?
Why were they not more upset that they supposedly “lost everything?” I’ve seen people who have lost everything and they had more emotion….devastation.
How is it that dad was not upset that his son got hit by a tree? Neither parent asked if that son was ok. And why were they cutting trees down so close to where everyone was working? Looks like one of many instances where they do not know what they are doing….As if they have little experience.
Then there are the names….Snowbird, Merry Christmas Kathrine Raindrop, Dark Cloud, Bam Bam sound like drugged up hippy names.
How do people surviving in the wild have time to spend climbing trees, learning sign language or an ancient Egyptian language if i remember correctly or learn magician “magic?” Yet they don’t know what an app is or an ipod? The more I watch this family and learn about them things simply are not coming together to be what the show is claiming. I’ve heard that people now days think everything on TV is real but just how stupid does Discovery think we all are? And yes I was fooled for a time but there are too many questions that keep coming to mind that I can’t find answers that fit in with what is being portrayed.
It also bothers me that he says that their house was burned down by the government…land the government owned. I recall something to the effect that they had been notified to leave. Seems natural that the government would get rid of the house on land it owns. After all you can’t go building and living on someone’s land without their permission. And if he thought the state was still giving free land it was his responsibility to get informed. No excuses! Though the cry once again is victim.
This show is an insult to my intelligence!
Maybe your intelligence is not intelligent. WE ARE SPOLIED to a lifestyle that fits our needs. This people work work hard EVERYDAY just to survive, we do not know what that is like. I love all of Alaska people and great respect for them. Keep on keeping on Alaska.
Really now? Are you sure I don’t know what it takes to survive in the wild? Are you sure my intelligence isn’t intelligent? I’m curious what you base your conclusions on with so little.
One thing I’m sure about is that anyone is dumb as dirt who after watching 1-4 episodes of a TV show come to conclusions that these people work hard! Especially now that they have been charged with possibly theft and dishonesty! What they are is plain as day for those who have eyes to see and ears to hear.
The way I was reading the Alaska’s laws… that it is illegal to barter using your own personal catch of salmon. I wonder what they are doing is legal using the lands of Alaska and are they following the Alaska fish and game laws. I find it so funny when the father told one of his bear hunting stories… LOL, how many times I’d heard that bs story before from other old fart hunters. I wish them the best living the way they do, but I don’t ever seeing my self living like Alaskan gypsies and you can’t barter your life away like that and how often do they take baths, they must smell badly.
