NEW! Is Alaskan Bush People Fake? Does It Matter?

Viewers of Discovery Channel’s Alaskan Bush People have been wondering if the four episodes of the Brown family’s adventures in the wilderness are all they’re going to get. The new show Siberian Cut takes over the Tuesday night time slot and no new episodes of Alaskan Bush People are currently scheduled.

[Update: A new episode of Alaskan Bush People, titled “The Wild Life,” premieres Sunday, June 15, at 10pm ET/PT on Discovery Channel. Based on the show’s description, it sounds like it might be a highlights/recap/additional unaired footage type of show: “After facing unparalleled obstacles, the Browns reflect on their past year of living in the Alaskan Bush while providing surprise revelations about the family’s lifestyle.”

Last seen, the Brown family suffered another setback as the boat they were using to scout a new home in southeast Alaska hit an object, took on water and sank at the dock. The family made it off the boat safely, but were left with an uncertain future.

They can’t possibly let the show end like that, can they?

Well, the news here is that there is no news. According to a Discovery Channel spokesman, the network has not announced whether or not Alaskan Bush People will be returning.

As for the Brown family, all nine of them were in Los Angeles in January for the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour and were on a panel to promote the show, which at the time was scheduled to air on Animal Planet. (So no, they didn’t starve or freeze or anything after their boat went down in Episode 4.) You can learn more about them and see some pretty interesting photos of the family at their official website. Also, do read this article by Zaz Hollander of Alaska Dispatch, who did some investigating into some of the behind-the-scenes aspects of the show that have been debated in these recaps.

At the panel, Billy Brown summed up the origin of his family’s Alaskan adventure as well as how the TV show came into existence:

“I was born in Fort Worth, Texas, and my family died when I was 16, and I kind of hit the road. When Ami and I got together, we traveled all over the place, and we found that as we were going places, we never were really content where we were. We kept getting we’d go to the country, and it wasn’t really enough country. We kept getting deeper and deeper in, and then, when Alaska opened up to us, it was like a it was like a ready made home to us. And when we got up I have written children’s books for my kids and stuff and a book about my life, One Wave at a Time, and our guys went in when you go to the harbor shacks and stuff, we get Internet every once in a while, and our guys went in, Bam especially, and he put a website for the kids’ books. And through that, a guy got in touch with us, and we ended up here. And I am the one that didn’t want to come. …

This is, you know, not what we had planned. We spent 30 years of our lives trying to stay as far away from this kind of stuff as we could, and people. And we discussed it a lot, and I guess … it was Ami that really talked me into it more that we thought it would be cool if people could really see how we live because I don’t think you guys know people who really still live that way, because it’s not a movie. It’s us.”

  1. I’m wondering how many of the post here are actually those Browns. Surely there can not be that many dense people. Can there?

    • Yes, there can be a lot of stupid people anywhere, even at the Discovery network. Do the cameramen, et al., know they can be charged with being an accomplice in promoting for profit the illegal use of firearms? Did the executives know this? Did their legal council inform them? Despite “liberal” propaganda, the state of Alaska, like most states, has strict gun control laws– and ALL STATES are required to have a FEDERAL background check (NICS). Other Alaskan family shows did it legally. In terms of the illegal use of firearms, the Brown’s, and Discovery’s, legal troubles have just begun. Those California executives should be getting a visit from the BATFE and FBI, just like they’ve visited others. Rules hold for everyone or they hold for no one. Welcome to the world created by the “liberals.”

      • Oh, yes, I almost forgot. Not only are the cameramen and executives, et al., felons, also, when it involves illegal and the illegal use of firearms, but their equipment can be seized, but as Californian residents they’re subject to extra penalties when it involves firearms anywhere, even if out of state. How do you like that for intrusive and totalitarian state government! Well, you get the government you vote for! Like I said, welcome to the world created by the “liberals.”

  2. I love the show….there is still real people out there!!! I just can’t believe that people still live this way pretty interesting!!! But love the show!!!

    • There’s nothing real about so-called “reality television.” By the very nature of the format the players have to act up, or appear to create a crisis, so as to keep people watching and the ratings high.

  3. If you can’t write any thing good about the bush family, DON’T WRITE,How about PRAYING for the BUSH FAMILY. THEY NEED,ITJUST LIKE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Let’s hope people will do honest verifiable research before commenting. (1) Their felonies and other legal troubles in Alaska are not their first. Look it up! How about trespassing, aggravated assault, terroristic threats, theft, and grand theft? (2) They spend half their time in Los Angeles! (3) Check into the records of the father and the three oldest sons. (4) How about buying the land they want with the money they get paid from Discovery? You just can’t go out and squat on designated park land or private deeded land owned by someone else whose paying taxes on it! How would you like it if they did that to your hard-working family? How would you like it if they did that to your inheritance? Other Alaskan families are real, the Brown’s are not! Can’t you tell the difference?

      Mary

    • Sorry if some of us offend you but the reality of it is that we are all entitled to express our opinion. If you don’t like reading what everyone says then a possible solution is NOT to read at all.

Perhaps YOU could pray for them. I’m not interested.

  4. Ak bush people has got to be one of the dumbest Ak shows yet. I enjoy watching the Kiltchers and all others set in Ak. But this one….HELP!

I’m not convinced that this family has done much living in the bush if any atall. Why would you pick the place that has the highest number of ratio of bears to square miles? (Not smart..) If you care about the bears you are not going to put them in danger of being shot and killed to protect yourselves. FIND SOMEWHERE ELSE TO LIVE!

I know that there has to be material 2 make a show but do we have 2 get this stupid?

And you do not need to do over kill on the poor fish. One good whack should be enough.

  5. Does anyone know how Billy Brown family died. All I can read is,his parents and sister all died together, and did he get a big inhertace if his family was rich,if so he shouldn’t have been homeless.

  6. Funny how this family is being screwed with and all this felony crap and I live in a state where there are lots of felonies being committed and system being used and abused and people are giving these people crap. Come live in Az so u can really cry. A bunch of cry babies messing with this family. What would Jesus say. Maybe forgive them and help them.

    • Jesus also said go and sin no more. Yet these people continue over and over.

Let’s not hold them responsible for stealing from the people of Ak. Then the PDF nobody will get on account of a bunch of dishonest lawbreakers.

Ok course when it comes too close to home a different song is always song.

  7. A bunch of haters!!!! People are just jealous they didn’t get to be in the show. I like the show. Pay the 13,000 back and continue the show. I want to see more of them. 13,0000 bucks ain’t sh×%.
Give me a break. They don’t deserve jail. The show makes people want to vacation there and spend money there.

    • I don’t hate the Browns. What I do not like is deception. They lied and stole money committing a felony.

The fact that a number of people think it should be excused is shocking. When it moves into the neighborhood, it’s a different tune.

    • Yeah, only it’s a felony. So with those the very least that will happen is that they will be disarmed for life. So much for “bush” living after that.

  8. I am pretty sad that The Alaskan Bush People are not on Discovery TV … BUT am hoping that Discovery Channel Australia will put it back on … I have been reading where everyone has put the Brown family down and I am not going claim that they should have know better but when people move away from civilization to rough it in the bush sometimes the little things like laws changing over the years can make people look like criminals especially if they didn’t know they had been changed. I have seen on TV here in Australia where people walk away from the hussel and bustle of city life some with families and some without. What they have faced when towns have grown over years and how the towns get closer to where they live and they are then approached by those well meaning public servants who tell them they can’t live in their tent any more (because some park their tents on waterfront bushland) and so they get told they have to leave and one man in particular was told he had to go because the council chambers officials said he had to move after being there for 25 years! He didn’t know that the laws had changed and possibly the same thing applies for the Brown family or maybe not. People are people and nobody has a right to choose how they live in life! As for them sounding like Australian/English because of their accents … maybe it has something to do with a middle ear infection as a child and they speak the way they hear things such as my youngest daughter had! Nothing fake just a slight hearing impairment. And who among us all can honestly say that they are all totally innocent of any wrong doing over the years and on my closing I would like to mention that these people are not your enemy they are merely doing a reality TV series and thats all! Oh one more thing if you want to hang somebody for crimes try linching those terrorists who are killing people on streets!

    • I really need to respond to this one. Judges all over our nation, in EVERY court, ALWAYS claim “ignorance of the law is no excuse.” The “liberals” really push this concept as a pretext to seizing not only the firearms of conservatives, but the rest of their property as well, as political punishment for being conservative and daring to question the omnipotence of the state. This happens EVERY DAY in our nation, and running away does not help. You can run, but you can’t hide. Given contemporary America, Alaska is no better than California. Don’t kid yourself! We’re all becoming slaves. “Liberals” feel they have the right to dictate to everyone how they should live, what to eat, and how to think. Still want to vote Democrat in 2016?

  9. I enjoy watching the show this year, although I never thought they were real bush people. Chichagof Island has some small native communities, including Icy Straight Point, a quant town which is a cruise ship port, where tourists can shop or go on wildlife excursions. I wonder if the Department of Alaska, or perhaps the Island of Chichagof Chamber of Commerce, has made this land available to Discovery as a way of marketing the area to bring in more tourists. Chichagof is known as Bear Island — there was a documentary about it a few years ago. I don’t understand putting a family in harm’s way by living out in the bush on Bear Island, which has more bears per capita than anywhere else. It’s fine if you are a tourist on a wildlife excursion, but to actually have to worry about bears coming into your campsite? You can only get to the island by float plane or boat, so it’s definitely off the beaten path. But I don’t believe this is really where the family is going to live. Maybe just for the show. How could you cook anything without bears coming in for the food?

  10. I was just wondering if a person wanted to could they go and stay withe browns for a year and learn how to survive the wilderness? Are they even still in the bush?

    • The Browns don’t know any more about living in the wilderness than Donald Duck. The sad thing here is this: Too many brain-dead Americans think they’re for real. That’s what scares me! Have we become that stupid?

  11. I am just plain sick of the Browns.

Too much that does not make sense. Too many unanswered questions. That’s when you know you are being lied to.

    • By chance are you relying on information you got from watching the series?

Might be more beneficial if you did some research. For example did you know billy writes children’s books? I’m sure some of the others also do stuff to bring money in.

  12. I can’t believe how some people think this show is fake & their all actors..they said the family doesn’t look like each other..Are they stupid..the boys all look alike..they all talk alike..their actions are alike.the oldest girl look just like the mother..their just idiots..I love the show..their family sticks together..that’s what family’s should do..RHIS world is FEELED with morons..the show is real.

  13. I think your all wonderful. I hope you get everything you need. Do you get paid for the show? I sure hope u get something out of all this bad luck……. fight for your rights! And the oldest daughter is next for getting her teeth fixed. She beautiful…..and deserves it ! You go mom your the best!

  14. I just discovered this show over the weekend and just love it!! And dying to find out more, I find their lifestyle very interesting and entertaining. Please, please film more!

  15. it seems to me if you really wanted to get the Alaska bush people of to a good footing you would Play the new seasons more than only on the Jan. 2. So those that missed it could watch it again . But know where I have look have I seen any repeat of the show. Friday is a day that is really hard to watch it on anyway.

  16. I have a problem with the accents of Billy Browns offspring. To me it is contrived, not matching the parents, which should if they were as alienated in the bush as they say they are. What schooling did they have? I do enjoy the show, however, along with the other Alaska shows.

    • The parents was born in Texas.the kids wasn’t…their accent is going to be where they was born..my cousins was born in Michigan & they moved to West Virginia..my cousins grew up & had kids..Well their kids sound nothing like their parents.the kids have such a southern draw & my adult cousins don’t sound hill Billy…so u can’t say their not their kids..that’s just stupid.my 1. Cousin move to Ketchikan for one year to be a police officer..so he could come back to Michigan to have experience to get hired in a police station in Michigan.Well he said in Alaska that they all had accents…so if u know forsure don’t judge these people.

      • Good point. It would seem that if they are all as alienated as they portray then the offspring would have no other accents to copy but the parents because that would be the only accent they would be hearing. I’m no linguist but that does sound logical.

  17. I am wondering if Discovery received funding for this series from the state of Alaska as the state provides funding for some film productions. If they did and misrepresented this family and if any hunting laws were broken then Discovery would have some guilt in not properly vetting this family. One of the first productions about gold mining a few yards ago was a slap in the face to small miners up here. The people in the show moved heavy equipment over a state owned bridge that wasn’t designed for that Load. Then They moved equipment across a fish stream without proper permits.
Just some outside dumb***** that don’t have a clue. Maybe this family will find a bus.

    • Great questions n comments by talkeetnachris. Yes do they have all their proper hunting tags/license. And fishing licenses. I doubt it. Discovery execs should all be fined along w the Poachers themselves. The Brown family. I remember years ago a friend of a friend called these people. ” Bush Oakies ” We laughed our asses off. But its true. This was at the Colorado River in Arizona. Not Alaska. But same critters. These people live like stray dogs. No wonder their un-welcomed most places. Their like dirty gypsies. But they are interesting people who do seem to share a incredibly strong family bond.

      • Alaska has special rules for “subsistence” families that allow them to take a certain amount of fish and wildlife for food without permits

        • Yes they do, but you have to be a resident to qualify for this . You have to live in Alaska for a whole year to get a hunting, fishing and trapping license. The same holds true for a PFD. The 4 Browns that were charged are goi g to a jury trial starting in March of 2015. The season that just started was filmed last summer, but I’d bet it is the last season for the Browns. With Billy charged with stealing over $13,000 for the state felony charges have been filed against him along with mom and two others. We see these cases a the time where people steal from the stste and with the severity of this I would be real surprised if there is no jail time . For fish and game violations the state routinely takes any items used in the talk of the fish and game. This includes vehicle from ATVs, car/trucks, airplanes guns and fishing g equipment. Heck if it was filmed they might even ask for the cameras. Time will tell, but they have had some serious charges brought against them. You rip people off, you pay the price.
