NEW! Is Alaskan Bush People Fake? Does It Matter?

Viewers of Discovery Channel’s Alaskan Bush People have been wondering if the four episodes of the Brown family’s adventures in the wilderness are all they’re going to get. The new show Siberian Cut takes over the Tuesday night time slot and no new episodes of Alaskan Bush People are currently scheduled.

[Update: A new episode of Alaskan Bush People, titled “The Wild Life,” premieres Sunday, June 15, at 10pm ET/PT on Discovery Channel. Based on the show’s description, it sounds like it might be a highlights/recap/additional unaired footage type of show: “After facing unparalleled obstacles, the Browns reflect on their past year of living in the Alaskan Bush while providing surprise revelations about the family’s lifestyle.”

Last seen, the Brown family suffered another setback as the boat they were using to scout a new home in southeast Alaska hit an object, took on water and sank at the dock. The family made it off the boat safely, but were left with an uncertain future.

They can’t possibly let the show end like that, can they?

Well, the news here is that there is no news. According to a Discovery Channel spokesman, the network has not announced whether or not Alaskan Bush People will be returning.

As for the Brown family, all nine of them were in Los Angeles in January for the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour and were on a panel to promote the show, which at the time was scheduled to air on Animal Planet. (So no, they didn’t starve or freeze or anything after their boat went down in Episode 4.) You can learn more about them and see some pretty interesting photos of the family at their official website. Also, do read this article by Zaz Hollander of Alaska Dispatch, who did some investigating into some of the behind-the-scenes aspects of the show that have been debated in these recaps.

At the panel, Billy Brown summed up the origin of his family’s Alaskan adventure as well as how the TV show came into existence:

“I was born in Fort Worth, Texas, and my family died when I was 16, and I kind of hit the road. When Ami and I got together, we traveled all over the place, and we found that as we were going places, we never were really content where we were. We kept getting we’d go to the country, and it wasn’t really enough country. We kept getting deeper and deeper in, and then, when Alaska opened up to us, it was like a it was like a ready made home to us. And when we got up I have written children’s books for my kids and stuff and a book about my life, One Wave at a Time, and our guys went in when you go to the harbor shacks and stuff, we get Internet every once in a while, and our guys went in, Bam especially, and he put a website for the kids’ books. And through that, a guy got in touch with us, and we ended up here. And I am the one that didn’t want to come. …

This is, you know, not what we had planned. We spent 30 years of our lives trying to stay as far away from this kind of stuff as we could, and people. And we discussed it a lot, and I guess … it was Ami that really talked me into it more that we thought it would be cool if people could really see how we live because I don’t think you guys know people who really still live that way, because it’s not a movie. It’s us.”

  1. You all got time to direct your attention towards a one hour a week program when americans & Christians are being beheaded & our president & military are doing absolutely nothing. Where’s the reality being directed now. Reality is we got americans dying & you’re worried about whether a scope cap was on the rifle or a moose kills people during the rut or other wise. Where in the heck are your heads at. It’s a great program & entertaining, which is what it was designed to do. I guess it is pretty fake, we don’t know what they do off set. But it is very entertaining. I don’t watch most of the dumb shows out there. when I don’t like them, I switch the channel. It’s that simple. So enjoy the show if you like it, or turn it off. Why would you watch a show to do nothing but complain about it. God bless America & the browns.

    • Good point but TV is just that and complete opposite from “reality”. Similar to what this country has in the “White House”, apart from reality.
Since we actually do live in Alaska we find it interesting that the Discovery channel claims that this Brown family purchased 29 acres on Chichagof Island. However, a quick search on either the State of Alaska’s Recorders office or the Sitka Borough assessor’s office website the ownership of this property has not been recorded, at least in the Brown’s name. These are public information websites. Also, very true that the deer hunt episodes Gabe had his scope covers closed over the scope therefore unable to see through his scope, hence, missed the deer, plus the second attempt with rifle without scope and “without” open sights. (reviewed on slow motion replay) yet the “lad” got his deer. As for myself hunting since the 1970’s I’ve always had to use my scope without the scope covers impeding my sighting, and or at least had open sights/iron sights to utilize on my rifles to sight in on my quarry.
As for “Discovery Channel Reality shows” they are far from it. Cute entertainment, but just that. For folks that have no clue or idea of living in Alaska that watch these shows they more then likely find them to be “real”. Another show of the Discovery Channel – “Alaska The Last Frontier” the Kilchers actually live approx. 6 miles from the nearest Safeway, and approx. 80 miles south of where we live. So off the “GRID” they are not.
Hopes this helps, from real Alaskans.

    • You people who keep saying that you like the ABP and want it to stay on yet you tell us if we don’t like it not to watch it? Is that really smart? Don’t you folks know that if we stop watching it the ratings will go down and with that the show could be cancelled? I’d like nothing better. I’m going to take your advice and stop watching and I hope others will do the same and we will see how long that damn wonderful o so real show lasts!

    • How about there speech? The village idiot billy brown claims that there IQ is off the charts, I am doubting that. Is this a product of the Alaska home school system? Or were they schooled by the village idiot billy brown? I am leaning towards the latter. To be honest there all as stupid as a box of rocks. Man I wish they read these post because I mean what I say!

        • Watch what your saying I am watching and listening you, trust me you don’t want me knocking on your front door, how is that grammar !

  2. Somebody mentioned in a post that somebody or other people built there old cabins I have been a general contractor for over 30 years and looking at the current cabin that is being built it is obvious that somebody is doing the building. The cuts are way to clean and unless you aren’t in the trade it is something that the normal person would’nt notice. There is no way that there building that by themselves, somebody is doing the building once the camera is off. There is no way those idiots are building that. Give it time that idiot billy brown will get sick or stubb his toe so he won’t be able to help, so he can get everybody to feel sorry for him. Be a real man and keep your daughter warm your a looser billy blue boy!

  3. Just watched last night show of The Bush people and noticed on the deer hunt he had scope covers on scope when he missed . Then on his 2 nd hunt he didn’t use sights at all and got a deer . he is a really good shot ha ha , this show makes me laugh

    • Was a fan at first. Now the last couple of episodes are showing how staged the show is. In addition to the shooting deer scenes there were very noticeable gaps in filming. Watch the scene trying to start chain saw. First coats off then coats are on when saw starts. Also Bam Bam is behind him when he is trying to start the saw and when it starts he is standing next to his father and Bear. The biggest one that shows it is staged was the house. They enter the house on a cloudy day. In the house there are obvious electric lights on that are hidden. You can see the lights are on in the outside filming of the house. Then once in the house suddenly there all the shadows. Next they enter the house during the day but then there is an inside shot of them entering the house and if you look it is dark outside. Another scripted fake reality show no longer worth watching.

  4. I think The Browns are a real family. I think they probably have had a “rough life” and they have obviously made some bad choices. They will have their day in court this June. As far as all the speculations of the family being thieves and ripping off people all over Alaska, if someone stole from you wouldn’t you report it to the police or take them to small claims court? There would be a police report/court record/paper trail of that. No one is flashing any records of that. The only records we see are the fraud and other charges they face in June so I would say the rest of what is being said by so called locals is just speculation and rumours. The Browns hit the jackpot when the Discovery channel offered them the show. It isn’t a real life documentary, and discovery shouldn’t have presented that way in the beginning, its an entertainment show. I suspect it is loosely based on their younger days of trying to survive in the Alaska bush. The entertainment show is both funny and entertaining at times. And like everyone else says…if you don’t like it don’t watch it.

  5. To all who bash the Brown’s: There are a lot of things that people have the capability of being or doing. Yet you come on a blog to bash a group of family members on a high moral horse and pass judgement on them as though you were side by side with them in the making of the show or in their daily living. Most of the nation is at home, watching tv, playing video games, or on the internet. Some of the show may be scripted, but where they are at is not. They are in Alaska and anyone who is willing to live in a natural environment, or even semi-off the grid should be commended. It is not right just to pass your feelings or thoughts on the way others live, whether it is scripted, or if they have done wrong, or even if they smoke. Who cares! It is not your life, and it should not be your wish to pass negative comments on this blog bashing a family who you do not even know. Everyone has bad things in their life, things they regret, or judgments passed on them with harsh words. Doing this to the Brown family will bring nothing but more harm than good and does not have a purpose. Watch or don’t watch that is your choice. But don’t judge others unless you are completely free of being judged yourself!

    • I can not say that I have ever joined the ranks of those who have been charged with a felon.

And YOU make judgements every day of your life! YOU ARE JUDGING some of those who have written about the Brown family as …what were the words…”BEING ON A HIGH MORAL HORSE!” (That’s being hypercritical.) If more people had high morals I believe the world would be a better place instead of a place that is going to hell in a hand basket because anything goes and let’s not judge anyone. Let the murderers, thieves, rapists etc all go free because we can not judge them. That is not a world I want to live in!

      • Oh and by the way I hope you don’t have children because we would not want to judge the child molester or drug dealer living next door. Let’s instead forgive him/her and give him/her access to your children!

    • Thats what we Americans do,talk shit about people, and say what you want there a bunch of losers, and freedom of speech right? I can’t even watch the commercials I hate all of them, really hate all of them.

      • Dear Dave,
Your maturity level just pours from you. Give yourself a break and pull the cord from the wall outlet. Thanks

    • Thank god I don’t no them, there all losers, and watch what you say you might hurt somebody’s feeling then will start talking shit about you!

    • I wish they they would find the highest bridge in Alaska and jump off, all of them. I hate them worse than our current president! And I hate his guts!

  6. I continue to read what people are saying about the Brown family and it’s mind boogling as to the perceptions people have about a TV show.

Life and people are more complex than what we view on a tv show. Producers want to entertain us the audience and they have been successful. Editors determine what we see and don’t see. In essence they can determine our perceptions about a person or place or in this case a family.

It confuses me when I read that the boys do not drink or smoke or do drugs (anyone who says this clearly has never known a drug addict). If this perception is based on on a tv show it is pure speculation and has no basis on reality. We the audience do not know what goes on when the cameras are off.

A few things are certain is that six Brown family members have been charged with 60 counts of first degree unsworn falsification ( a class C felony) and first and second degree theft (each a class C felony), Billy, the father, Amora, the mother, and four of the five boys are all charged.

It scares me when I read that the parents are ‘doing something right.’ A felony is nothing to brush off! There could be prison time and possibly fines.

  7. It’s okay with me if they want to live the way they do. It’s none of anyone else’s business…Kenneth! I hope they stay healthy and have no pain. I was worried about the mother when she had dental problems. That can be very dangerous to have infection close to your brain. They all seem happy and don’t come across as serial killers unlike you Kenneth. So let them have at it.

    • Once again, people cannot live any way they want when they break the law and/or it impacts others. You can’t use firearms illegally, you can’t take game illegally, and you can’t steal land. Just because something isn’t being used does not give you the right to take it and use it, especially when someone else purchased it and is paying taxes on it. Your last comment is a cheap and unnecessary shot.

    • the show has not been cancelled and yes it is possible to have morals not be on the grid God bless that family and people should open a newspaper and read the facts not b.s….they are not on the dole do not rob rape or kill …are not drug addicts or trash

  8. I so happen to love the show. People if you don’t’ like it don’t watch it. Let the rest of us enjoy it. It’s a down to earth show like duck dynasty. Look what you’ll s asy about them too. Discovery please continue to air the program.

    • First, it’s not “down-to-earth,” it’s fake, and if people can’t tell the difference, then I really worry for the future of our nation. (Otto is real.) Second, after Discovery gets visited by the BATFE, there might not be a second season aired.

  9. The Mother & Father of this clan are the most selfish and uncaring adults imaginable. Look at the hardships they have put their offspring through, and all because they did not want to pay on a mortgage, and pay taxes, and want to live off the land ? Such Garbage ! And all they can do is Barter to get things they need ? Well they had a boat that sunk, they have chainsaws, built a house etc ! This show is a bunch of trash, just like the poor uneducated slobs that are the family.

    • I will not sit back and let you trash the parents. Look at their kids, they don’t disrespect them, and none of them do drugs smoke cigarettes or swear. Saying that means they are doing something right. Look at our city kids no respect and all they want is bigger phones and more money.

      • I continue to read what people are saying and its mind boogling as to the perceptions people have about a tv show. Life and people are more complex than what you see on a TV show. It scares me when I read that the parents, Billy and Amora are doing something right. A felony is pretty serious folks! There could be prison time!

      • I live in Hoonah and I can assure you that they do, in fact, smoke cigarettes. While walking the dog, on a leash, around the parking lot of Icy Strait Lodge, while waiting on the vans to come pick them up and take them to the boat that takes them down the bay to film each day… Family values, morals, life skills…EVERYTHING you people see on screen is scripted.

        • Alaskan Bush People is scripted? Ahhh, it’s the end of the world! I won’t believe it’s scripted! I won’t! I won’t! I won’t! They are thieves….liars….lazy bums…felons….they might be going to jail! You are just jealous!

  10. I’m a little behind on the show. Saw a couple of new ones this evening. I guess they aired last month. Anyhow this show is getting dumber and dumber. It’s getting tiring.

The narrator said that Ami’s dishes have a fresh smell on account of the pine needles in the dish water. Huh? I can’t say that with all the floral and lemon scent my dish detergent has that my clean dishes have ever had a scent.

I thought Matt is 31. A seran wrap house? Hey ladies here’s a real homesteader for you! Don’t y’all fight too hard over this one!

Gabe fires at the deer and the cover is still on the scope. Good Grief!! If you are going to hunt, trap crabs, set up an out house or whatever learn how it’s done first!

Bunch of goofballs if you ask me!

  11. I LOVE ABP AND IF I WAS YOUNGER AND IN GOOD HEALTH I WOULD WANT TO DO THE SAME AS THESE PEOPLE ARE DOING. ANYONE WHO GRIPES ABOUT THEM IS JUST JEALOUS. I HOPE THEY HAVE A VERY LONG RUN WITH THEIR SHOW!!!

    • I’m not jealous of them. The difference from you and I is that I know more about who they are. My intelligence level has not allowed me to rely on a tv show to give me 100% perception and what I believe about them. I’ve not been content to settle on what is told to me on a fake tv show. Second I and others have remained open minded. We’ve questioned and put thinking into what we have seen on tv and have found contradictions in the show.

Did you know that Billy Brown and his family have through the years scammed and stolen from friends and family? That Billy said he captained a fishing boat for 35 years which never happened. That when not filming they stay in a hotel in the nearest town with the film crew? Discovery is leasing the land for the show. People are paid to build the buildings for the show. The browns have a nice house which is not in the bush. The person who turned them in about the PDF lives outside the state and knows where the Browns were living in the lower 48. So much i bet you don’t have a clue about because you are getting all you know from a tv show and your imagination is filling in the gaps.

However you are free to think and choose what you will. Or you can go research and find out just why those of us do not like the browns and get the facts for yourself from those who know and have known the browns.

      • Uh, no, you are jealous.
You may not be a lot of other things but,
trust me, you are jealous. You and many
        others.
And anyone who uses phrases as
“my intelligence level” sounds like an overly
confident twelve year old who is not as
smart- or “mature”- as he thinks is.
        And it shows.

        • I agree with you, brain in use. This show is only a show done by low class scum. I read somewhere that he stole from his grandmother! His own grandmother i think it said ge stole jewlery! What a sorry a#*! In one of the episodes the town folk was warning them about stealing and all. I think their reputation for being thieves the town folk had first hand knowledge. I read stuff wrote by an individual who knew the Browns and their stealing ways. And I am not jealous of them either.

        • Brenda- Good grief you all. What does it matter if it is scripted or not. I for one loved the Little House on the Prairie books. Thank God I do not have to live that way, but I enjoy watching and reading about others who choose to live that way. I have just read that they live in hotels with the film crews, let them and be happy for them. Sit back, shut up and enjoy the show. Have you noticed how well spoken they are? Stop throwing the stones and let your imagination work for you. The show has a lot of wonderful scenes. Enjoy it and if it bothers you so much, pray for them. If you can’t do that change the channel.

    • You would want to lie, cheat, steal, squat on someone else’s land, needlessly kill game, trash, and potentially harm others with firearms?

  12. I just saw the commercial for next weeks show and what is it? Of corse billy brown is in his little jack shack hurt or unable to help do any Manuel labor again just like I posted last week, every time there is some type of work that needs to be done he has something wrong with him so he can sit back and bark out orders and be the ( boss) or the ( big shot) billy brown your a looser this is why you don’t have a real job cuz you would last 2 days before you got fired for not making it cuz something would be wrong. I don’t feel sorry for you and to be honest it’s getting old watching you.( looser)

    • Well he’s spent the last 30 plus years bossing his wife and children around. First Ami then the children did the work while he stole and lied and cheated people so he wouldn’t have to work….lowlife!

  13. I am from ft worth and i remember the crash. I want to know where Billy went to school and what part of ft worth his family lived. I love this show. How can you say its fake. They are out there and doing this! Can’t wait to see if boys find wives…..

    • Try doing some googling. But the one place I highly recommend is: facebook.com/groups/alaskanbushpeople. There are people who personally know the browns there. Ami’s brother being one of them. Don’t forget to check the files section.

    • We live 1 mile from their original cabin that was “miles” from town….. Total lie 1 mile from the Grizly Bar they are a sham and an imberasement to all Alaskans. Come on people you can’t be that stupid

      • Dave,
        you, buddy, are an “embarrassment”.
Learn how to spell, dummy, or (easier for you)
get “spell check” on you computer before
criticizing others. This way you might not come
        across as being so stupid.

  14. I’ve read a number of these posts and I am pretty sure that some of the Brown family read and post on this blog. So…..Y’all have to get it together! I dont want to hurt anyones feelings or offend anyone but y’alls show right now stinks!

A family that pulls together. Can work and live together is powerful. But not when it looks like one poster says “hippies gone camping.” Now really can y’all not do better than that? If it lasts I’d like to see a better show next season or I’m gonna have to cut ya show loose.

    • Fake as a three doller bill. A Kens oil cat’s got a better chance in hell than they do surviving in the wilderness!

  15. The other Alaskan shows are scripted but what happened here? The Kiltchers are fun to watch. The show in Macarthy is scripted but it’s funny and interesting. Life Below Zero and the others are nothing like ABP.

In my opinion ABP is like a kids show with dumb story line. Somebody should be fired!

  16. This family is totally fake. They know nothing about living off the land. Biker jackets and pork chop sideburns- are you kidding? Sleeping on the bare ground – plastic plates and forks. Moose will only attack when they are rutting – they are not psychos on four legs. This show is sickening.

    • Not defending the show (it’s cheesy as hell) but don’t tell an Alaskan a moose won’t attack unless under certain circumstances because they WILL attack for any reason they see fit. Moose are some of the most dangerous and aggressive animals on the planet and unless you’ve lived in the Alaska bush like I have (just a few miles from the Copper Center subdivision they “barely survived in”) you’d have no freaking idea how deadly and unpredictable a moose is. Frankly, I’d rather deal with a bear than a moose any day of the week.
